to the italian meetup group:

i have just posted a new event/film on the independent film group page that may be of special interest to members of the italian meetup.  we will be seeing il divo at the cleveland institute of art's cinematheque on friday, july 24.  the film is in italian with subtitles.  The after-party and discussion and dinner will be at guarino's in little italy.  i would like to extend an invitation to members of the italian group to join us.

best way to do that is to head over to the independent movie site and join.  Then you can have a seamless rsvp for the flick.

if you missed our meetup last week for away we go followed by dinner at lockkeepers in valley view, you really missed something special. restaurant manager brian woehrman provided a real treat.  our table was loaded with what seemed to be unending appetizers: shrimp, crab cakes, mussels, tuna tartaro, and sausage stuffed peppers - all complementary. amazing! the lockkeepers entres were equally excellent!

i need to remember that this is a film group and not a food group.  but, we have another special treat in store for those attending the after-party at guarinos in little italy following    il divo @ cinematheque on friday, july 24th.  owner and chief nancy phillips has promised to create a special complementary desert treat for us. it will be chefs choice and her way of thanking us for returning to guarinos.

weather permitting, well be seated in guarinos beautiful italian garden for the perfect after party.

no, its not the popular simon cowell music group il divo playing in town this week, its an italian film that rates a 89 percent on the infamous tomatometer.

as a primer to modern italian politics, il divo is like touring the subject in a candy-apple red ferrari. you might not learn much, but you will remember the experience.  at once hyperbolic and incredibly restrained, the narrative follows closely the day-to-day habits of a wicked politician who glides through the marbled corridors of power as if he were a ghost whose diabolical deeds are at all times invisible.  does that sound familiar?   il divo (a masculine counterpart to diva) chronicles the career of seven-time italian prime minister giulio andreotti, not andretti.

the los angeles times said, one of two breakthrough italian films (the other was gomorrah) to receive prizes at cannes last year, il divo comes by its intricacy honestly. it deals with what's been called "the fiendish complexities of postwar italian politics," and it throws more names at you than the naples phone book. but there's only one you need to remember, one man you can't forget, and that's giulio andreotti.

seven times italy's prime minister, made senator for life in 1991 and still active at age 90, andreotti is best understood by his nicknames: the sphinx, the hunchback, the black pope. enigmatic and inscrutable, his country's most powerful and feared politician for more than 50 years, andreotti is as controversial as only someone who understands power to the nth degree can be.

join us for a memorable film and what promises to be a wonderful dinner.
