In Italian "Buon Natale" (literally, the good birth) means Merry Christmas

A popular tradition amongst southern Italians and Italian-Americans is the Christmas eve dinner known as "La Vigilia" (the vigil for birth of our Lord) or "Notte di Sette Pesce" ( Seh-Tay-Pesh-Aye) (night of seven fishes). This is a feast of a fish dinner comprised of at least as many varieties of fish. In some areas of Italy, it can be as few as 3 (for the Trinity) or as many as 12 (after the number of Apostles). The number will always have a religious significance.

We will re-create some fish dishes. Maria will distribute a menu of recipes to those who request, and it will be the responsibiity of participants to prepare one recipe with enough food for 2 other people. If you will not bring a dish, you must pay $20 two weeks prior to this event.

Here are some ideas are (or bring your own traditional family fish dish):

Aragoste e Gamberetti con Spaghetti Russo (Lobster-Shrimp red sauce with pasta - called for by Maria & Al)

Frutte Di Mare (Fruit Of The Sea) or cold fish salad appetizer. It is a mix of baby shrimp, baby Octopus legs, Calamari (Squid), Muscles, Clams (and more) in an Olive Oil based Garlic Sauce with other herbs. Sam's Club has frozen bags of mixed fish for Paella around the holidays You can use this.

Baccala (battered & fried Cod)

Gamberetti Freddo e Caldo (Cold shrimp with 2 sauces and hot breaded shrimp with lemon wedges) (called for by Margo)

Crab Cakes (Mary Anna)

Finocchio Al'Olio (Fennel, spices and Virgin Olive Oil).

Zuppa Granchi con Crema (Cream Of Crab Soup)

Pesce di Mandorla  (Almond encrusted Tilapia)

Cerchi di Samone (Stuffed Salmon Wheels - available at Albertson's- Armida & Eli)

Claims Oreganata (baked)

Salsa Pasta di Sarde

Spanish Galicia Sardines in Lemon Sauce (Al & Maria)

Fish Gumbo over Rice (Linda & Howard)

Fresh & Crusty Italian Bread (by Zeffiro's only) (Mary)

Pizza Grana (Sweet Grain Pie - quite a challenge)

Pandoro (sweetbread) (Maria & Al)

Dessert (Joan- guest)

Espresso (Al & Maria)

Wine (Mary)

Beverages (Mary)

Not everyone HAS to bring a fish dish. We also need Desserts.

Getting fresh fish is a challenge here in Las Cruces, but it IS possible the closer we get to Christmas.

                                                                       Christmas Gift Exchange

We will be doing a Christmas Gift Exchange at this party. We did this last year and it was so much fun.

If you would like to join in please bring a “non gender” wrapped gift, per person, for no more than $10.00 of value (each gift).

Mary decorates her home BIG TIME for Christmas! It will be Una Festa Superbo!

There will be caroling, of course!
