Play for Adults

Invited speaker/facilitator:

Hilary O'Shaughnessy (Make and Do)

Make and Do was established a few years ago by theatremaker Hilary O’ Shaughnessy in response to an Arts Council bursary for research into performance and pervasive games. Since then, they  have produced PlayFair, Ireland’s first pervasive games festival and continue to collaborate with festivals, arts organisations, educational institutions and the general public to produce work. Their work sits at the intersection of live art and games. The company works with a talented mix of performers, makers, designers, technologists and facilitators. Their latest work is We, a game of resistance, solidarity and imagination, which has been designed on purpose for the GAME - The Future of Play exhibition in the Science Gallery in Dublin. The exhibition remains open until 18 Jan 2013. Currently, Hilary is doing a masters in Interactive Media Design at the University of Limerick.

I gained a few nuggets at this one.
I met an top notch 'app' designer who says he's just "learnt it recently".
I met a photographer who isn't but is a 'karate kid' instead and I discovered that play may be the most important element in just about everything.
Deep shit - straight from the off.

Excellent evening! Hilary put us in the right mood, and we played several games - they were fun and energizing and required attention. Afterwards, we had an interesting discussion about designing a possible game for Limerick.
