Marcus & Joan Belgrave Jazz Ensemble
Tuesday, June 17, 6:00 p.m. Arrive early for prime seating.

The renowned trumpeter and his vocalist wife perform jazz and blues at its finest as they take you on a musical journey from the ‘30s to the present. Marcus Belgrave, known for his longtime gig as the master jazz trumpeter for Ray Charles, has enthralled audiences worldwide with his musical virtuosity. Enter in the powerful, yet alluring voice of his wife Joan Belgrave and you have a must see event to mark on your calendar.

Marcus Belgrave in the Local News.... 3/12/2014:

"A Detroit jazz legend and his stolen horn have been reunited."

Marcus Belgrave’s custom-made trumpet, which was stolen from the trunk of his car on Friday night in Eastern Market in Detroit, was recovered at Zeidman’s pawnshop, a few blocks east of the market area. The trumpeter picked up the horn at the downtown police station this afternoon, blowing a few choruses of “Oh Happy Day” for the assembled media as his wife, Joan, sang along.

“I’m smiling from ear to ear,” the 77-year-old Belgrave said later. See the full article here:Article link

Sad news... Detroit jazz trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave has died at 78. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to see him perform at last year's Java & Jazz event. Here's the link to the Free Press article: http://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/2015/05/24/trumpeter-marcus-belgrave/27878711/

The traffic on 96 heading back from Okemos was grueling.......It was 6:30 when I hit FH and was exhausted from the heat and driving... disappointed that I missed the concert......

Barbara... I'm so sorry you had such difficulty making it to this event... especially since you suggested this one as well as going out afterwards to Maccabee's for dinner. The performances were all amazing and you would have had a blast. Hopefully you can catch July's performance as its the last in the series. I got off work early just to get a head start... we waited for about 30mins for members to arrive, but I did not meet everyone on the attendee list.

I didn't make it, Kendra. Left the dentist (in St Clair Shores) at 6:15 with half my face numb and figured I'd better come home. I thought I was getting a quick check on a previous extraction, but I was down for two fillings. Next time....

Hi Barbara - I was going to add this event when we got closer to June. Typically if members rsvp for an event months ahead, they tend to forget about it and not show up. So I try to post events happening within eight weeks.

I have the entire series schedule under our group discussion area here: http://www.meetup.com/JAZZ-SOCIETY-OF-GREATER-DETROIT/messages/boards/thread/42720992
