MJV at the DIA!! Free Concert This Sunday!

Greetings, and a Happy New Year to all of you!   'Metro Jazz Voices' is pleased to start off 2013 with a big bang, this SUNDAY, JANUARY 13, and we hope you can join us!   At 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., MJV will premier exciting new arrangements, alongside some old favorites, at the Detroit Institute of Arts, in the beautiful Kresge Court, as part of the DIA's "Sunday Music Bar" concert series. Our performance is entitled New Music for a New Year, and will feature 4 brand-new arrangements by Carl Cafagna and Scott Gwinnell, as well as 2 other arrangements we haven't performed in Michigan before. Concerts are FREE with admission to the DIA (or with a DIA membership). The DIA, of course, is located at 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit MI.   Several of our new arrangements mark an exciting new forray into the art of 'Vocalese,' which means the application of Lyrics to music that was composed for instruments only (usually, very difficult, technically demanding music). The creator and most successful practicioner of 'Vocalese' is Jon Hendricks, of Lambert, Hendricks& Ross, who also wrote all the lyrics for Manhattan Transfer. More recent entrants to the fray have included Darmon Meader, of the New York Voices, and Paris Rutherford. With this performance, Sunday Jan. 13 at the DIA, Carl Cafagna throws his hat into the ring as the newest member of the Vocalese Club, and we think you'll be thrilled at the results. Carl's choice of material is the music of Charlie Parker, which few have ever tried to scat-sing, let alone put lyrics to! On Sunday, you'll hear Cafagna's lyrics to not only the melodies of Parker's tunes 'Crazeology' and 'Bluebird', but also the recorded solos by Bird, Miles Davis and others. Trust me, you don't want to miss it!   Please call the DIA at (313)[masked] for more info., or   We hope to see you there, MERI, TRISH, CARL and JORDAN
