April Meetup: Wolf Hall

Meet us at 8 to discuss Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, and come early at 7 to hang out, have some food and drinks, and discuss other things! Hope to see you there!

Note:  this will be a book-voting meetup!  Yes, again already.

If you would like to vote for our next three books, please arrive by 7:30.  Voting should be concluded by 8:00 pm.  Nominees will be posted on our message board.

Voting is in two rounds:  the first round winnows out the less popular books, and then it's the top 3 vote-getters in the second round.

England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

In inimitable style, Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall is "a darkly brilliant reimagining of life under Henry VIII. . . . Magnificent." (The Boston Globe).

I know I missed this particular discussion, but I am almost 400 pgs in to WOLF HALL, and I am seriously considering not finishing. I'm with Machelle: this write is not for me either.

Well I finally finished the book and it did not get any better. This writer is not for me.

A good Fresh Air interview with Hilary Mantel about the Cromwell trilogy, focusing on the sequel to this one:

Disappointed at missing it but will be at next meetup - loving Just Kids! Watching you listing the next 3 books with interest right now - I'm guessing my nomination - The Last Runaway wasn't picked then if they're all short stories? :)

Runaway made it to the 2nd round, Chris -- you could renominate it next time!

Here's info from Wikipedia about the title and the Latin saying which I couldn't remember last night: "The title comes from the name of the Seymour family seat at Wolf Hall or Wulfhall in Wiltshire; the title's allusion to the old Latin saying "Man is wolf to man" serves as a constant reminder of the dangerously opportunistic nature of the world through which Cromwell navigates."

This is a book I am actually going to complete despite not finishing it in time for the Meetup. Got to like it more and more as it went along, until now I am really liking it, especially after hearing the interesting observations added in by our attendees last night!
