"The History of Love", by Nicole Krauss

Note: this is a book-voting Meetup.  We will be picking out our next FOUR books.  Please nominate some good books for us to read on our message board here.   Your nomination and vote may mean the difference between us reading a GREAT book vs. a merely good book.

If you would like to participate in the voting, please arrive at 7 if possible.  Voting will be concluded by 7:30.

*******************

We will be discussing Nicole Krauss's "The History of Love".  The Formal Discussion will begin at 7:30.

Juli will do the book/author notes.

*********************

Nicole Krauss's The History of Love is a hauntingly beautiful novel about two characters whose lives are woven together in such complex ways that even after the last page is turned, the reader is left to wonder what really happened. In the hands of a less gifted writer, unraveling this tangled web could easily give way to complete chaos. However, under Krauss's watchful eye, these twists and turns only strengthen the impact of this enchanting book.

“One of the most passionate vindications of the written word in recent fiction. It takes one’s breath away.” (Spectator )

“It restores your faith in fiction. It restores all sorts of faith.” (Ali Smith )

“It’s the sort of book that makes life bearable after all.” (Miami Herald )

The discussion went well for such a large turnout. Really great to hear such a diversity of ideas expressed -- I like the book both more AND less than I did before! Hope to re-read it one day in light of this new knowledge. It's a keeper.

I loved this book on one read, but when it comes to novels, my philosophy is that if something is worth reading it is worth reading slowly. For me, this was a relatively quick read. l am a child of Holocaust survivors and I felt I knew people like the characters my whole life.

Mark: I totally agree. I'm finishing my first read-thru and and just going through the motions. It's been a struggle keeping the characters straight. I think it took me a long time to figure out that young Alma's character was in first person - but then - what? The relationships are not clear to me. A second read is needed - but it's not going to happen. A shame because i loved the beginning of the book.. M

Well, I did like this book, but it seems like it would require at least two readings to appreciate it, really. Or else one slow and patient reading.

I will just be back from vacation in North Carolina, and I haven't read this book (unless I can find it on vacation & read it quickly), but I'll try to be there since I've missed the last two Meetups. Miss your faces!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
