Portrait Lesson 1: Shooting into the Sun

  • Jul 7, 2013 · 3:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We're setting up a series of lessons for beginners to learn how to shoot portraits. So many requests for portrait from new members that we're setting up a series of Portrait Lessons to cover the many ways of shooting people.

Those who have attended the numerous portrait shoots may want to skip this one. But for the beginners and those who still haven't gotten a grasp of portrait shooting, this is for you!

For this beginner tutorial, we are going to have the subject sit between the sun and the camera. The sun will be behind the subject's head and we will shoot into the sunlight. In this case, the subject will be darkened because of the intensity of the sunlight. That's where we need to light up the subject with a reflector or a speedlite/flash. Watch this video to see how it's done.

Yes, George. We will have another session like that soon. Still can't predict the weather for weeks ahead. But we'll do it anyway and not worry if it may rain. That's up to God.

By the way everyone, if you have an assignment like shooting models or project, etc. that involves photography, post it here on this meetup. When it's about photography, I'll bet many of our members will come help you out. The more you shoot, the better you'll get, seriously! I shoot all kinds of crap everyday, just to learn more.

Some of the chain stores have good prices. I got my 7D from Broadway. It's cheaper by 1k than most camera shops, and did give me interest free credit. And I got a free umbrella and a useless tripod.

What's a good location for get an affordable reflector? =)

    June 19, 2013

    • Andrew T.

Would you recommend a reflector OR "off-camera flash with radio triggers and light modifier"? xD I'm planning on doing on a single purchase, as I'm sort of tight on money lately.

      June 21, 2013

    • ron

Get a reflector. You'll shoot amazing portraits with just that.

There's no limit to the number of attendees, Alexandra. There's always room for one more. If you miss this one, there'll be another. I'm making this a series of 5 lessons for portrait.

The event is still 2 weeks away so I'm guessing a few of you are thinking of buying a set of triggers, Speedlite and softbox. Here's some advice. Get triggers and Speedlites that take common, easily available AA or AAA batteries. If you get those that take strange, hard to find batteries, like CR123A or the like, you'll be paying more for these batteries because they're hard to find. Imagine you going for a trip to some mountain in Mongolia for some photography. Your batteries are flat and you can't find a 7-11 store that has them. As for softbox, get the umbrella types that fold easily. As for light stands, check their tightening screws. Make sure you get the metal type screws. The plastic screws break the first time you tighten them. Pay a little bit more for a good stand. Don't go cheap on them or you'll regret when you have to buy another again, thus spending more because you went cheap the first time.

  • Bing B.

the location is too far away

    1 · June 18, 2013

    • ron

Not really that far, Bing. There are some mini buses that will take you there on the way to Aberdeen that's much further. I chose Cyberport to get the advantage that no buildings would block the evening sun there. We're shooting in the open park next to the sea. It would be great if you could make it.

      1 · June 18, 2013

I've moved the meeting time to 3pm. I've also given our location at Cyberport. It's on the western side of HK and we'll catch the sunset over Disneyland. Please check your transport schedules so you arrive on time. The sun goes down pretty quickly.
