Hiking and Photography season, guys and gals!

Hong Kong Trail Section One begins at the Peak Tram Station on Lugard Road. The beginning section is a level vehicular road that can be easily tackled by hikers of all ages. The route circles the mid-slopes of Victoria Peak. You can enjoy beautiful views of Victoria Harbour and Kowloon. Besides, there are many information plates along the way. One of them introduces the origins of Tai Ping Shan and Lo Fung, both Chinese names of Victoria Peak. This summit is the highest point of Hong Kong Island. Because of the Humid and misty environment, the densest forests on Hong Kong Island are concentrated on these hills.

Strolling along the Native Tree Walk, you come across a great variety of flora. Some of them are pointed out by information plates. Those highlighted include the Lance-leaved Sterculia , Hong Kong Pavetta , Turn-in-the-wind and many other plants. Further up, an India Rubber Tree with dense aerial roots stands by the trail.

Beyond Harlech Road, the going gets moderately difficult, as the hiker has to negotiate steps, cement hill paths and dirt roads. Further up to the Lung Fu Shan lookout, the spectacular landscape of western Hong Kong Island unfolds before you. After feasting yourself on so much beautiful landscape, follow a flight of steps down a steep slope. Soon, Pokfulam Reservoir welcomes you with its emerald water. On the left, you find the Pokfulam Family Walk that runs parallel with the lake. This level plantation path is a pleasure to explore. At Pokfulam Reservoir Road, Section One of the Hong Kong Trail comes to an end.

What to Bring:

1. Camera ( any camera, any lens )

2. Hiking Shoes.

3. Water.

4. Pack only what you need. Watch the video of what you'll see along the way. Then bring appropriate stuff.

You guys took amazing shots! I so wish I could have joined :( IT would have been trouble tough if I got sick again during the hike. I hope there'll be another hike in the same area soon, the views are amazing!

Thanks, Dennis and Xa for leading the group. I'd like to apologize for not being able to attend. I'd like to also apologize on behalf of those who RSVP'd yes, but never turned up or gave any indication that they weren't coming. Members, please think of other people who may be waiting for you and the organizers who sacrifice their family time and effort. We don't get paid to do this.

No problem Ron. The most important thing is we had fun and did a lot of shooting. In fact, the our numbers (12 people) are just fine. When we hiked to High West, its peak is not very spacious and the stairs are narrow.

It is awesome. The weather was fine, we enjoyed fantastic view along the way and met great people.

First of all, our apologies to our event host, Xa Chang. We were at the scheduled meetup point outside Pier 5 at 9:30, then we waited for 2 more late participants then boarded the bus at 9:50 (just outside Pier 5). I think a better arrangement next time, let's share our contact numbers prior to the event (all event hosts and organizers, so we can respond and communicate faster). Again, our apologies for the miscommunication. Summary: - There were 12 attendees (most of us are first timers).
    - Everything was self-guided.
    - Weather was cloudy, a bit hot, but visibility was acceptable
    - 10:40 arrive at the Peak
    - Peak Tower --> Lugard Road (cityscape views) --> High West/西高山 (unplanned side trip)
    - 13:05 - meetup group split into two groups
    - Team A (most of us) chose to return to Peak Tower via Harlech Road. Finished around 14:00.
    - Team B (few of us) chose to complete the Stage 1 trail by going to Pok Fu Lam

Trail Stage #1 was challenging, exciting and offered prime views of Hong Kong Harbour! I showed up early, a little after 09:00am, met up with Dennis at the designated place, shortly after everyone who was going was there and then we left promptly at 10:00am! Everyone was very nice, fun and I had a great time!

I have never been to this trail but I think our timeline will be as follows:

09:30 - Gathering point, wait for participants
10:00 - Take bus 15 to the Peak
10:40 - Arrive at the Peak and find Lugard Road for the starting point of the hike
10:40 - Hiking (2-4 hours, depending on pace, rest time and shooting time)
14:30 - Reach the end point at Pok Fu Lam, can take buses back to the city

    July 26, 2013

    • VC

Hi Dennis , do you mind tell me how to get the gathering point ?

      July 27, 2013

    • Dennis

If you are arriving via MTR, it is easier to reach the ferry area via Hong Kong station. Follow the exit that directs to ferry. But you won't reach the ferry immediately, you will enter a mall (IFC). There should be a long bridge connecting the ferry and IFC mall. Walk on the bridge to the ferry. I suggest you bring the map shown on the top of this page to be safe.

Joining for the first time. See u guys at pier 5 at 9:30 on Sunday. Will come loaded with my camera gear. Let me know if its getting cancelled because of the rains.

  • Mirka Charlotte K.

Do you know what time we should finish? Thanks :-)

    July 26, 2013

Can't make this trip guys. Some extra project came up so I have to work on Sunday.

    July 26, 2013

  • Rex

May I know the place where we will dismiss? Thanks in advance.

    July 25, 2013

    • Dennis

The hike ends at Pok Fu Lam reservoir. Check this link, there are transportation details for the return journey from Pokfulam Reservoir to different destinations.

      http://www.hkwalkers....

Let's hope the weather clears up on Sunday. It is not fun to hike in the rain and we also risk damaging our photography gear.

Dennis, can you lead the group by yourself?

The problem is I haven't tried that trail (but I am trusting the map)

What's your phone, Dennis? I can't lead the group on Saturday. I have to lead another one on Sunday to Tai-O.
All you is make sure all who turn up at Central Ferry Pier is there. If you can't, then we'll postpone a week later to Sunday. Many members still work on Saturdays and you won't have a good turn out.

    Transport:

    Bus No. 15
Central Pier 5 to The Peak
    Fare : HK$ 9.80
Bus journey time, 35 minutes, approx

    http://www.nwstbus.com.hk/ (search "15")

Let's see how many people are interested first. We also need to consider the weather (rainy day is not a good day to hike or shoot aerial views of the city). Prefer to meet at a unique place (the bus 15 stop outside Central Pier 5 should be unique).

The Hong Kong Trail Stage 1 (from Victoria Peak to Po Fuk Lam Reservoir) should have some scenic routes. Recommended for hiking on a clear visibility day with blue skies and white clouds.

    Route Details: - http://www.hike.hk/load.jsp?route=hk1&page=1

    Map:

Difficulty: Medium (should be ok for summer)
    Distance: 7 km
Time: 2 hours (could be 3-4 hours for people carrying heavy DSLRs, taking long breaks, enjoying the scenery and shooting pictures)

(actually haven't tried this trail, and I am not an expert hiker or pro photographer)

Good idea Dennis. Any suggested place that we can hike to?? We've been to Shing Moon reservoir, long hike. We've also been to shoot Tsing Ma bridge.....longer hike. And Tai Moh San....super long hike. Real iffy weather now. That's why I've been putting off for so long. We're all fans of hiking and shooting.
