Macro photography on Fung Yen Butterfly reserve.

Introduction of the site we will vsit:

Fung Yuen, which is situated about 2 kilometers from Tai Po Town Centre, is a famous site for appreciating butterflies in Hong Kong and Asia.As early as 1980, the 42 hectares of land in Fung Yuen Valley has been listed as a "Site of Special Scientific Interest", of which about 8% (5 hectares) of private land with high conservation value.Statistics shows that over 200 species of butterflies which accounts for 80% of the total 240 species have been recorded in Fung Yuen. Among them, about 75 species are uncommon and 30 species are rare in Hong Kong.Troides helena (Common Birdwing) and Lamproptera curius (White Dragontail) is the most unique in over 200 butterfly species. (see pictures below)Aristolochia tagala (India Birthwort) and Illigera celebica (Illigera) are the larval food plants of Birdwing and White Dragontail respectively. Both plants can be found in Fung Yuen which is protected under the Forestry Regulations of the Forests and Countryside Ordinance.Fung Yuen has high ecological value of three major reasons:

(1)topography (geographic factors)

Today's weather could be an indication of tomorrow's weather. It was a constant strong wind that is welcome in this hot weather. The short but heavy rain comes and goes. For 1 hour, it's a sunny day with blue skies. Then it goes dark and rains for 5 minutes, then dry again with blue skies. Looking at the clouds above and it looks like a timelapse movie. Clouds move fast across the sky bringing rain clouds and then just as suddenly, disappear with clear blue skies and sunshine.

This may seem a very silly question to many but this will be my first trip out of HK centre! What is the etiquette for clothing regarding the terrain and environment?. i.e shorts or long trousers, boots or trainers, etc???

You can use short and running shoes. Bring also rain cover or umbrella in case of rain. I'm import thinks remember the insect repellent.:-)

It's a hot summer but the typhoon warning brings wind and rain. Wear light clothing and shorts. Water proof walking shoes and light raincoat with a hood.

Here's a trick to get good macro lens performance from cheap extension tubes that can't control your aperture. Set your lens to a smaller aperture first. Then, hold down the depth of field (DOF) button. Your aperture will close down to the f-stop that you set, say f14. Remove your lens while still holding down the DOF button.
Now your lens will maintain aperture at f14. Screw your cheap extension tubes to the lens and then attach the lens back to camera. Now you can shoot at f14.
