Paid Photo Assignments for members of JPG!

Chit Chat Magazine has made an offer to our JPG Meetup to buy the photos that you shoot. For all the times that we've shot Dragon Boat Race, Christmas Decorations, Wet Market, scenes from the Peak and all else are now worth their value in cash. It's not like the deals from those international image banks where you wait for years to get one tiny payment.

Here's a little brief about them.

About Chit Chat

Chit Chat magazine is a fast growing free bilingual magazine. We have developed each section of Chit Chat to specifically attract a diverse reader group made up of young families and people living, working and studying within our distribution areas.

Chit Chat currently distributes more than 25,000 copies monthly via private estates and club houses, key railway stations, public areas, restaurants, schools, waiting rooms and customer outlets located throughout New Territories and Kowloon. We aim to expand hard copy distribution to 50,000 copies by mid 2014.

Or you can check out the link: http://chitchat.hk/about/

These are the kinds of photos they're looking for which was shot by our members from previous events.

Here's how it works

CCM will give out assignments of what kind of photos they want. Our JPG members can organize the assignment as an event or each member can shoot the photos by themselves.

Photography fees are paid for published images only. Payment is made within 30 days of publishing.
Photographer credits are listed for all images used.

Chit Chat Magazine also offer hourly rates for some assignments which vary depending on the task at hand, shoot location, etc  Again these terms are specified in advance.

From time to time Chit Chat Magazine may request non paid images depending on the projects we are working on. We also host occasional photography competitions with great prizes to be won.
If a job is unpaid or a part of a competition shoot, specific terms are conditions are advised in advance.

I like this idea, it will be fun to have your photos published on printed magazines.

Thanks for the initiative Ron. We all would love the idea to have our work published. I agree with PH the terms don't look fair. I am aware I am not a pro but I would expect a better compensation. How do we show them our respective catalogues?

From time to time, Chit Chat does also receive exclusive invitation to participate in press shoots where upcoming photographers looking for a foot in the door, have the perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with those in the game. We always invite our best contributing photographers for the job.

What Ben said is what I've experienced. My editorial shoots didn't pay much. Many times I did them for free. But that led to calls from advertisers from that magazine. Advertisers scan these magazines every issue from top to bottom, looking for that competitive edge and asking "Who shot that?". They hope to find that edge in us. That's where I make my money. And when those ads show, I get more calls. So it's not sitting at home, knowing you are good and hope people will call. They don't know where to find you. Get your photos out to where businesses can see it.

Great effort Ron. More than the money, i think the recognition to have a photograph published (especially for a person like me), who still has photography as a hobby, is a big deal. Thanks for arranging it.

    1 · July 25

    • Claudia Y.

I very much want to make my hobby another opportunity too!

      July 31

    • ron

Opportunities will come. This is the next step. The 1st step is improving your skills. Ask us lots of questions on how to shoot better. And having your photos published on Chit Chat and getting paid gives you encouragement. It means the editor thinks your photo is newsworthy. Publishing your photos on social media and getting 100 'likes' does not improve your skills and pays you nothing.

So maybe this can be turned into a part-time job, as its so difficult to find any employment here...

  • Ignacio V.

No chance still to get in??

    July 25

    • ron

Ignacio, this is just an announcement. Not an event. Do read above so you're clear about it.

    • Ignacio V.

Noted!! Very interested on this one

  • Jesslyn

Ah...I wish I knew earlier! I didn't bring my camera to work today :(
You guys enjoy. Will join the next photo shooting event next time definately. :) cheers

jesslyn, it is an open discussion; no actual event today.

I see. I only read the description briefly.. Now I feel better. (Hahaa)
Quite impressive that the photos produced from this group are being recognized! Can't wait to do some shooting with all of you soon.

      July 25

  • ron

We'll be getting the new assignment soon.

  • ron

PH, I'm working on some new deals. Let's see where we go from here.

    • PH

Ron, Don't get me wrong. I applaud your effort and always admire you for your great photography and amazing energy in running this group. Just trying to get a better deal.

      2 · July 25

  • Raji T.

I think this is a great idea. It's a stepping stone to getting recognition as a photographer. Plus it encourages you do better and forces you to change your style. Me likes!

    2 · July 25

  • Claudia Y.

This seems interesting to know! Looking at the amount they offer, i presume they only purchase their use of the photo for one time of publication only?

    July 25

    • ron

It may not be published one time. What it says is paying for your photo and giving you credit for it. I'll contact them to get a clear definition about using each photo more than once and the payment.

      1 · July 25

    • Claudia Y.

Yes this would be good to know! Many thanks Ron!!

      July 25

  • Beavis F.

I wonder if they accept iso2000 photos from my 60d though, haha....i dont hv 1.4 or even 2.8 lens......so for night time photos.....

    July 25

    • Beavis F.

And i hv weak hands and i cant get sharp shots at 1/30or 1/50, haa

      July 25

  • PH

Great idea, Ron. Thanks for your hard work. Though the amount offered is on the low side. $150 for a Cover Page image? Nearly laughable. Come on. A fairer value should be offered. My 2 cents. How do we submit our images?

    2 · July 25

    • Rich F.

Something is better than nothing ;-)

      2 · July 25

    • ron

Yes, I agree. It's a start. We usually shoot for free with no incentive other than being a social club.

      2 · July 25

  • Nevin Y.

Hey Ron, I have been following the JPG activities even though I haven't managed to take part in really. Your efforts for the group are truly admirable. If feasible, I agree with some of the members suggesting a bargain to get a higher rate. The chance of success is slim though and it will take you extra effort. A big hand to you.

    1 · July 25

    • ron

Nevin, we'll try this for a start. As the Chit Chat Magazine grows, we can grow along with them. I'm still working on other deals to benefit our members. In Malaysia, Canon sponsors lighting equipment, T-shirts, prizes and even female models to groups of photographers on a street shoot. All you need to do is use a a Canon camera and wear their red T-shirt. In HK, Canon told me they don't do such things. It's very different here. Nothing is free in HK. You'll be lucky to get a free umbrella.

  • Claudia Y.

Hi ron, does it mean there is a meetup tonight at 7?

    July 25

    • ron

No, it's just an announcement to all members that the offer starts today. When we receive an assignment, we'll organize an event for it.

      1 · July 25

  • Wilbur L.

Well done Ron! It's great to see you get connection with these magazines. Keep up with the good works and I reckon it will benefit for many photographers here to push their creativity to the next level!

    2 · July 25

    • ron

Wilbur, it was Ben Nairn from Chit Chat who approached us. He saw good things happening at JPG Meetup. It's a start. Things can only get better.

      July 25

  • Christophe G.

Are they only interested in future shoots or they would also like to have some of our past events?

    July 25

    • ron

When they put out an assignment, for example, 'Fishermen in Aberdeen', we'll look at our archives. If we already have them, we can submit. If we don't, then we go shoot. So yes, past events photos can be used.

      July 25

  • ron

PH, I think the amount of money offered is still good motivation for anyone. For the beginners, they won't be shooting blindly anymore as they will now spend a moment thinking and composing each shot before pressing the trigger. And CCM usually selects a few shots to use, not just one.
