Getting Back to Basics (or starting from there)

This meet up is suited for those who are just starting with photography, or anyone more experienced but wishes to learn the manual controls of their camera. Naturally, it would be best if you are using a DSLR (not a point-and-shoot).

If this format and structure becomes popular, we can hold them regularly.

We will start by running through the following basics: exposure, focusing, focal lengths, crop factors, depth-of-field, motion blur (or perhaps more importantly, no motion blur). Once the theory is out of the way, we will then practice the above concepts during a casual photo walk through Hong Kong Park located above the mall.

We will not be covering flash photography as I believe this is a higher-level topic that should not be explored unless the foundations are fully understood.

We are going to meet at Pacific Place Shopping Mall (Admiralty MTR Exit C1) at 3:00pm, this Saturday, Nov 3. Please see the exact meeting point in the map here: http://files.meetup.com/1868581/PP-L1.jpg . We will not have a fixed schedule but I predict the event will last a couple of hours.

Thank you for all the positive comments! It looks like a good idea to continue these sessions and perhaps make them an ongoing thing. Therefore, I am planning the next meet up for late November to take advantage of the good weather this time of the year. Stay tuned!

Michael! What an informative session! I like how you explain complicated concepts using a simple language. Your are always tactful too. (not necessarily the case among professional artists...) Thanks again!

Hi Michael, I don't have a DSLR but I am interested in learning the basics. Will it be a problem if I go? Thanks.

    Regards,
    ZZ

    • Michael L.

Definitely no problem to come along if you would like. However, there is only so much you can learn with theory if you don't have a camera to practice on.

i use canon GIX!! can i join?!

    October 30, 2012

    • Michael L.

The Canon G1X falls in the same category as the Olympus XZ-1, so I think it's OK. Just be sure to bring your instruction manual.

I am afraid I cannot make this meet up any earlier. I don't plan on charging for the basics.

  • Betty C.

Hi is it possible to move the meetup time to earlier hour like starting from 11am or 12pm ? I have been waiting for a beginner class so long in the group and I really want to make it this time! Btw is there any charge to this practice?
