    what's the reason for the extreme colour banding? or at least i think that's what they're called.

    Not sure what you mean by colour banding but IMHO this photo looks like you had too much contrast before converting

    I did a little research on "Colour Banding", and apparently it's down to jpeg compression, where there's not even colour range to display a smooth transition of colours, so then you'll get colour banding. I tried something new for my processing this time. Usually I process the image in LR4, then I'll export as JPEG. Then I'll edit the JPEGs in PS. But recently read that you can export the file from LR4 directly into PS as a PSD file, and therefore retaining more details. Maybe I messed up somewhere with the new workflow, and the photo got compressed somewhere. Will have to spend some time on it!
