May 19, 10 am hike from Riverview Cemetery west to Washington's Arch

This will be a repeat of the very popular hike we have taken nine times before.

It's a challenging 6 1/2 mile hike over hill and dale that will take us to the 1882 pump house building.

To Washington's Arch.

Then hike 3/4 mile further west up the river.

On the return we'll come by a little known yet historically significant structure that is nearly 200 years old.

As a fellow hiker commented, "It's not a street walker hike." I promise you'll find it beautiful!

Don't make the mistake of parking at the Riverview Cemetery entrance. Take one of the winding roads all the way to the south eastern most corner of cemetery where you will find ample parking on the grass. You will literally be able to see the river from where your car is parked.

Arrive early as we plan to begin hiking promptly at 10 am.

"He who will not risk cannot win." - John Paul Jones.
This quote from long ago relates to today's 14 hikers. 42 hikers were signed up to do the hike 2 days ago, but most bailed out because of a rain forecast.
In fact it didn't rain at all, and the weather was near perfect.
We got to see the river up close at 6.2 feet depth and observe the ravishes of the 14 foot high water mark from just a week ago.
Good exercise, beautiful scenery and a very friendly group of people made for a fine way to spend a Sunday.
We hiked 7.4 miles in 3 hours 42 minutes.

Jerome, here is my standard answer about dogs.

One that they will not become the center of attention and two that they will not interfere with any of the other hikers. Hope to see you and you dog later this morning.

Will this be a rain or shine hike? If "No", when will that decision be made? Thanks!

    May 18, 2013

    • Dennis B.

Let's talk about the rain which at this moment is a 50% probability. On numerous earlier hikes an ominous rain forecast did not in fact materialize, and those who attended anyway had a good experience. Nevertheless, it's not fun to hike in the rain. I plan to be there before 10 am and make a go/no go decision.

If anything changes on that count, I'll send another email to everyone tomorrow morning.
