Sept. 28, 8 am hike from Tredegar Iron Works to Slave Trail

This 7 1/4 mile approx. 4 hr 20 min. hike begins at the parking lot west of Tredegar Iron Works.

We'll hike to Brown's Island, then across the pipe walk where we'll see the heron rookery and then cross Mayo bridge. From there we'll head east up the south side of the James River to the Slave Trail. At Manchester docks we will double back to Mayo Bridge and hike to Manchester Lookout on the south flood wall. We'll then walk north across the Manchester Bridge and return to our starting point.

You'll see for yourself how the islands, canals, bridges, dams, levee and rapids of the James River shaped the history of Richmond from its very origin, through it's industrial age, to the War Between the States and up to the present with the recently constructed flood wall.

You'll walk in the footprints of tens of thousands of slaves who were unloaded from their ships at Manchester docks and marched in the darkness to Richmond's slave markets.

Additionally, I expect you'll meet a bunch of fellow local hikers with whom you have much in common and you'll be glad you know.

    Danny asked this question:

Hi Dennis Can you be more specific about the parKing location for this hike? I can't tell from Google maps where we park. Thanks Danny
    *********
Park in the lot west (upstream) of Tredegar Iron Works and just east of the Lee Bridge/pedestrian suspension bridge that leads to Belle Isle.

Is the majority of this hike mostly on paved paths?

    September 15, 2013

    • Rick A

See: http://www.visitrichm... Map indicates about one-half of route is not on pavement. East-West route from Mayo's Bridge to Ancarow's landing is improved rail.
