The Dutch Gap Conservation Area is nearby, about halfway between Richmond and Petersburg. We’ll hike the 4.5 mile trail around the Tidal Lagoon. The trail is flat and relatively easy, and the setting is woods, meadows, lagoon, wildlife, and James River. Since the parking area is shared with Henricus Historical Park, an additional option after the hike would be to visit the park. It’s the site of the first permanent settlement established in the Virginia Colony after Jamestown. The 1611 settlement has been recreated with over a dozen period structures, and is worth seeing. The admission is $8.00. Special activities are going on during the weekend of our hike, which should add to the experience. Check it out by searching Dutch Gap Conservation Area and Henricus Historical Park.
