June 10, 8:00 am: Walk with Dogs at Joseph Bryan Park

  • Jun 10, 2014 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

You are invited to a walk with dogs in Joseph Bryan Park. Feel free to come even if you don't have a dog. We will walk for about 1-1/2 hours. Afterwards, you are invited to my home which is about 3 miles from the park, for refreshments and socializing. The dogs can stay on the deck in the shade, provided with plenty of water.

Please note: Bryan Park is dog-friendly as long as the animal is on a leash. The fine for non-compliance is $250.00.

The park is easily reached by way of I-95, Exit 80. Take a right onto Hermitage Road, cross the overpass, and the main entrance to the park is on your left. You can also take Boulevard (Rt. 161) which turns into Hermitage Road and subsequently into Lakeside Avenue.

In keeping with the spirit of the historical aspect of the James River Hiking Group, here are some facts about the historical significance of the Joseph Bryan Park:

Joseph Bryan Park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

    Traudel,
What they said! Your dog walks have become part of all of our weekly lives and I don't want to miss any of them. Such a nice group of people; always a warm and inviting atmosphere.

I will third the motion Martha, this wonderful group of ladies have in so many ways become so much more than a meetup group and it is the best group I have ever belonged to. Thank you Traudel, for bringing us together and your lovely bruncheon that you so wonderfully hosted. Your garden is gorgeous and so aromatic. Mary the African coffee is out of this world good. Thank you for sharing it with us.

You're right Martha...I feel like I'm in the Sierra Club version of the Jr./ Sr. Women's Club ! ...and that chocolate libation Traudel served after her delicious bruncheon reminded me of those wild "Calendar Girls" in the movie...(-:

Although it was hot and humid this morning, we (=10 JR hikers and 4 dogs) walked around Bryan Park for 4+ miles. Boni joined us afterwards, and we enjoyed some refreshments and good conversation - fun, as always. Marna, thanks for taking care of Clyde. Looking forward to seeing you on future hikes.

This Bryan Park meetup group has become so much more than just a walk. Love spending time with all of you ladies, and thank you Traudel for being such a gracious leader and host.

I would like to meet up at your place after the walk. What would you like me to bring?

    June 8, 2014

    • Traudel M.

Lenora, you are more than welcome to join us after the hike. Boni is coming, too. Just meet us at Shelter #1 around 9:30 am, and then follow us to my home. No need to bring anything. This one is on me.

I've had a little set back with the foot so will not be able to make it in the morn. I was so looking forward to hanging out with the group. Tell Boni and Clyde hello for me and maybe I can catch them another time. Have fun for me.

I had to Un-Rsvp due to temps as well. Can't wait to meet everyone!

I am not going to make it tomorrow due to the temps. I was really looking forward to meeting everyone. I watched the weather report and it is supposed to be 77 degrees at 8am, with the heat index, and my old girl can't take that heat. I will try the next one. Have a great day.

I can help walk Clyde if Marna wants a break.

Thank you, Virginia. Boni will sure appreciate it, especially knowing how well you always take care of our Madeline.

      June 6, 2014

  • Traudel M.

Would one or two of you non-dog owners be willing to walk Clyde on this hike? Boni would drop him off at 8 am and meet us after the hike to pick him up and join us at my place for refreshments.

I love Bryan Park and got married here 18 years ago on June 8th. I don't have a dog but if I did, it would be a German Shepard... LOL

I look forward to meeting another great Dane lover. Mine is having a very hard time in this heat. You never said the age of your Dane.

Sorry Lisa, I inadvertently left out the number of his age. Typo I guess. Anyhow, he will be 6 yrs old the end of August. He is sometimes mistaken to be a puppy by some people as he is still very energetic for his age. He loves to be with the doggie friends a lot. I hope you Dane will have fun also. I do take care with the heat factor as well for Malachi. We try to stay in the woods hiking as much as possible since it is a bit cooler. Bring lots of water and you can wet him down after we get back to the cars to cool him off, which will help to ease the stress of the heat on him hopefully.

Is this walk in the shade? I have an 8 1/2 year old great Dane, that is having a hard time in the heat. Would love to join in. Thanks

    June 4, 2014

    • Traudel M.

Lisa, we switched the starting time for this weekly hike to 8 am because of concerns with heat. We will be walking in the woods most of the time, but there will be short stretches when we will be exposed to sun, which should not be that big a problem early in the morning. FYI: One of the regulars on this hike also brings her Great Dane who is about the same age as yours!

What would you like me to bring Taudel? Even though 8 am is early, it does enable us to get in a longer hike. I am also glad for the dogs as well as it is easier for us to hike when it is cooler.

    June 3, 2014

  • Virginia

We will miss you Jeff. 8 am is probably better for the dogs. Let us know what refreshments we can bring to your house, Traudel.

    June 3, 2014

  • Jeff R.

I was one who said keep it at 8:00, but now I realize I have to work.

    June 3, 2014

    • Traudel M.

And I was going to get a special Panera muffin just for you. Now you ruined it! Feel guilty?- LOL!
