Big Band at the Elephant

2013 was a great year for the Big Band Jams.

Let's do it even bigger and better at the Elephant Studios.

Fully stocked with gear so we don't have to do so much lugging/setup.  Maybe drummers might need to bring some better cymbals, but everything else will be there.

I will have my usual kit of stuff as backup.

Let's SWING in 2014!!  Come join us and make some noise.

Thanks all you great Muso's! Gives me a chance to workout (destroy) my lungs. Good to meet you Mikey and Peter and see you again I hope.
Sad lack of female voices but Jasmine represented the fairer sex (haha) on Sax and Harp. Thanks Dave for your work in making this happen....And Dazza..inspirational as ever. Stephen, John, Brian and Joel wonderful accomplices in Fun. See you all soon. (promise to get son of a preacher right)

Ditto Richie... I was blown away by the music prowess of all you sax players, and your gentleness as great people :) ... I had so much fun. I'll bring electric for lead next time, acoustic fret boards can't reach the last fret required for Baker street lead for instance......on acoustic shorter boards I was compelled to follow sax leads...soz...

A little acknowledgement too to our one and only audience member Paul. Paul will be a useful person to get feedback on our tone and sound as he kindly sat and heard it all - thanks Paul - any feedback??? Also mate just jump in next time, I for one felt really bad you sat on the sideline I wanted you to join in...please do next time, even if its just a tambourine... or whatever. Hope to see you again. Pete

Hi guys, my email is so swamped with notifications that I didn't even see this even coming up!!! I'm already double booked! I'll definitely be at the next one though! Keep those trumpet parts for me Richie.

    Got some great Trumpet parts...

    March 20, 2014

  • Richie

    Where's Georgia ? Help !!!

    March 20, 2014

  • Richie

Got some reasonable brass parts for
    Brickhouse...(so groovy)
    Move on up
    Gimme some lovin
    Let's stick together
    Hold on I'm coming
    Son of a Preacher
    Midnight hour
    Pick up the pieces

I realise this is a one dimensional list and needs input of softer edged material and some deletions...
We always do pretty well on unfamiliar songs too...real jamming, and they all start out that way.Lots of fun...and noise !!

Hey I'm pretty amateur but I've wanted to start playing again Just haven't found many people since I came to oz .should I come along to this or would it better for me to come along to a house session . I play some guitar and sing

    March 19, 2014

    • brett

just come along mate were all amateur here, you just have to bring your own stuff with the chords written down or you may know the songs already not sure what the song list is yet but the songs Richie last put up is probably a good place to start

Is it ok to come and watch? Or should I bring my banjo?

    March 18, 2014

Bring your banjo OF COURSE! :)

My guitar amplifier has started hiccupping recently...
So a question for David if I may: Does the P.A. system in the studio take direct input from an electro-acoustic guitar? (If not, do they hire out amp's?)

    March 10, 2014

    • Pete W.

Mike I'm on the waitlist now...so if I don't move up the list then just swing by my place prior I'll loan you my lunchbox amp (kid gloves of course!). Pete

      You're on now.

      1 · March 16, 2014

  • Richie

There are also brass arrangements made by Fiona of the following
Don't get me wrong Pretenders C
Son of a Preacher Man D
Hard to make a stand Cheryl Crowe C
    Heat Wave Linda Ronstadt C
I'll stand by you Carrie Underwood C
    Midnight Hour E
    Proud Mary G ?
Something to talk about Bonnie Raitt A

We have played some of these before and some I don't know.

    March 16, 2014

    • David D.

Zane and I shared the vocals on the Sam and Dave parts. There was room for improvement, but that Ab key was a bit of a stretch to get to some of the original wails.

      March 16, 2014

    • David D.

I think it's one we should be able to nail eventually though.

      March 16, 2014

  • Andrew I.

Good suggestion Richie. Let's bring back son of a preacher man in D, destination anywhere in Bm. Marg can sing on those. Mark, any faves?

    1 · March 7, 2014

    • Pete W.

Its the key of A and so should be kept there except for vocalist's requests...

Thanks for the link for Son of a Preacher Man", just had a bit of a practice. Cannot wait to jam with like minded people who are passionate about music. And maybe I can learn some tips from others who play guitar, I'm a very much a newbie where guitar is concerned! :-D

      March 16, 2014

  • brett

as the big band is for songs with horn sections just to get things rolling I propose a song list of
    baker street
    son of a preacher man
    destination anywhere
    in the midnight hour
    lets stick together
    hold on I'm coming
theres 6 songs to work on

    March 15, 2014

    • Pete W.

...that will also involve a LOUD sound check....with 50W+ tube amps a necessity...

Punk, not so off the wall Peter! Rebel Yell! Yeeeeah!

      March 16, 2014

  • Mikey

Just wondering if any these would be 'suitable' for the session?
    - Hold On I'm Coming (Key E)
    - In The Midnight Hour (?)
    - Brown Eyed Girl (Key G)
    - Moondance (Key Am)
    - My Girl (Key C)
    - While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Key Am)

    March 10, 2014

    • David D.

I think we've done the first two in previous sessions. I don't think the others have ready arrangements for brass.

      March 16, 2014

    • Richie

Yes.."hold on i'm coming" is easy enough not to need an arrangement...Good one. A David Dargie special from what I remember.

      March 16, 2014

  • Richie

    Hi
David will put up the final list I guess but as far as arrangements go the ones that are best are
Move on up Pick up the pieces Got to get you into my life and working on Brickhouse Gimme some lovin and Lets stick together ( one note arrangement but what a great note !! ) Baker St coud have a rest. Brett's list is great too. Another on or two for the girls to sing and another funk for Funkmeister Dazza. All too much and so little time.

    March 15, 2014

    • Pete W.

Richie, your investment shines...make music what is becomes, and keep on shining..will be good to see you and follow your lead ... Pete

      March 16, 2014

  • Clifton A.

How are we going with a Play list?
As the big band sound is about the gourgous horn section, how about putting up a list Richie?

    About an old standard like
'When the Saints go Marching in'?
    'Chattanooga Choo Choo'?
(I hope no one is laughing at me?)

    March 15, 2014

    • Richie

HI Clifton. No laughing matter! Got full chattanooga arrangement for 12 brass. It's a bastard to play and there are no guitar parts.

    1 · March 9, 2014

    • Stephen

ok sound good . i think a hendrix memorial jam later this year is a great idea

      March 13, 2014

    • Richie

Wouldn't mind a brass rest David if you want to do a Jimi Hendrix number. Specially if we have someone who plays like him. Bring it on!

      March 13, 2014

  • malcolm m.

Do you folks play off chord charts and do you have a book of favorites?

    1 · March 13, 2014

    • Richie

The brass play off chords or primitive arrangements and the guitars mostly have words and chords they make themselves once the songlist is finalised.

      March 13, 2014

    • Richie

This will happen soon together with the keys to be used. Then most people get the chords off the internet...and words I guess. It's all quite relaxed !

  • David D.

Hi All. I'm overseas between March 8 and 17th, so I may only sporadically get to the meetup site.

Does anyone want to start the suggestions for set list rolling?

We did a heap of coll tunes last year. Which ones will we recycle and what new material will we do?

    March 7, 2014

    • David D.

7 nation army was perfect for the last session. Also perfect for our stairway to heaven sessions. I'm not sure how it will work with so many instruments including the brass. But we can give it a try.

Hey Big Band Groovers! Regrettably, I need to be in Asia for a few weeks which counts me out of this Big Band Jam which is a real bummer! Great song suggestions so far Andrew with Preacher and Destination which we nailed last time ...and the Ferry suggestion Richie is a real cracker. Sorry I can't make this one fellow Jammers especially also with the killer muso line up .... But I am sure the stratocaster boys will provide the funk and rockin sounds !!! Have a great jam guys !!

    Hi All
How about "Let's stick together" by Brian Ferry. Lots of Brass and just a Blues in A major.

And the good old songbook we already have
