"Using the power of film and dialogue to unite, educate, and inspire."
Javaflix Savannah meets [Feb 2016 location TBD!] on the second Saturday of every month since September 2013!
Javaflix is a movie discussion group founded in the Philadelphia area by George Dougherty. One night in 2002 after watching "Solaris" in a movie theater with a group of friends, George was very interested in discussing what he saw in the film. All his friends, including me, skedaddled home leaving George with a lot on his mind. He realized he'd have to be more intentional about sitting down with folks to talk about interesting movies.
Javaflix West Philly has recently celebrated its 13th birthday and has voted on, watched, and discussed almost 200 movies. Javaflix Savannah was founded in 2013 and held its first screening and discussion event in September. Since then 8-40 Javaflixians have met monthly to watch and discuss Mud, The Great Gatsby, The Way Way Back, The World’s End, Blackfish, Fruitvale Station, Wadjda, Dallas Buyers Club, 12 Years A Slave, Her, Philomena, The Lunch Box, Finding Vivian Maier, Belle, Chef, A Most Wanted Man, Calvary, Dear White People, Birdman, The Imitation Game, Living Is Easy With Eyes Closed, Spring, Hector And The Search For Happiness, Ex Machina, Match, Love & Mercy, Inside Out, Far From Men, He Named Me Malala, and next month’s movie...
How are the movies chosen? At every Javaflix screening and discussion event, attendees receive a ballot with which to vote on 5 pre-selected films. Condensed trailers are shown showcasing the 5 films. Each person then gets 5 votes. Attendees cast their 5 votes in any amount they wish for which film or films they would like to watch and discuss at the following month’s screening and discussion event. Eventually an announcement is made!
