An Experiment with IndexedDB

A recent collaboration required a web application able to update a data set from tablets in multiple locations, without continuous internet access.

Since the client was using Windows Pro tablets,  a local LAMP stack provided a familiar and reliable solution.

But with HTML5, IndexedDB offered an unfamiliar but intriguing alternative.

So I'll present a small experiment: a stripped-down version of both options for your review and comment.

Someone (Santhosh?) asked "why not SQLite?" instead of a LAMP server on the tablet.

Interesting. Our short answer was, basically, this project started with a MySQL database and a Sencha.js front end and evolved from there. (Except for a side trip into indexedDB, to be continued.)

But doing this with just Javascript and SQLite would be pretty cool. So at first Google turned up mostly stackoverflow links with highly-rated answers suggesting indexedDB. Then a little more digging turned up a number of references to this: http://github.grumdrig.com/node-sqlite/

Any experience with this in our group?

    Eric,
Thanks for the links and I found your talk both refreshing and enlightening - that "middle square method" is "good enough for government work" still makes me smile!

Uh-oh, that just slipped out from public-sector experience. The way "can't see it from my house" might slip out from construction experience.

Sorry I didn't have the IndexedDB example ready, in part because I'd been busy with Monte Carlo simulations of the application. So that's what we talked about.

Here is an example I built using Knockout.js, typescript and indexeddb. https://github.com/davidfekke/PeopleKODB

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
