Open Jazz Jam @ Rock'n' Joe at Union Train Station

Let's head over to Rockn' Joe Coffeehouse for their first ever Friday night Open Jazz Jam on December 7th.

Musicians and singers, come ready to perform!

Conveniently located right inside the Union Train Station (across from Kean University), Rock'n Joe is a BYOB with a twist:

Bring some Bailey's for your coffee... some Amaretto for your latte or maybe some butterscotch schnapps for your hot chocolate. Also available from the kitchen are full-sized sandwiches, salads and pastries. Whatever your preference, let's kick back and enjoy some jazz together after a long work week.

Directions/How To Find Us + Parking

Rockn' Joe is located right inside the Union Train station lobby, right across Green Lane from Kean University. View this map of the area or find directions directly from your area via Google.

The parking lot is huge and although the spots are marked "reserved", you will not be ticketed if you park after 6pm.

The coffeehouse is not very big, so you should easily find us. Still, if this is your first time joining the group, here are three easy ways to spot us:

  1. look for the Jazzville, NJ Meetup sign: http://bit.ly/zBZxVL
  2. look for me: http://bit.ly/zP11QP
  3. ask at the bar for the "Jazzville, NJ Meetup" group

Hope to see you there!

peace and jazz,

This was absolutely, positively, the MOST UNIQUE jazz jam I've ever been to. First of all, due to the weather and a death in one of the musicians' families, only one horn (Dan, sax player) showed up... but rather than be sullen and give up, Dan was a consummate professional. He brought along a laptop and an amp which provided a full backing track for him to play over.

Ok, on to the unique part:
First of all, he interacted with us like we were old friends... right from the start. Then every few songs he'd ask for requests. Some he knew - others he didn't, but had sheet music for. Once, I asked for Lullaby of Birdland and though he'd never played it before, he faked it like he'd written the tune!

Ok, so the coolest part of the jam? We played a game where Dan started playing a general blues tune. Then every so often, he'd look at one of the audience members and we'd have to yell out a song that he would "crowbar" the melody of into the current song. Talk about talent!

Hi -- how did you get permission from NJT for a music event in the station? I'm asking because I think this is a great idea that needs to spread. Can you imagine informal jazz concerts for waiting commuters all across our state? What a great way to build our audience and give our performers some exposure. Unfortunately I will be out of town for this event, but I'd like to learn about others and help if I can.

If this works out, we'd like to have this once a month on the first Friday of each month so maybe you can catch our next one! :)

Jim, If you know any musicians that want to jam, invite them along! Spreading the word is the most important thing considering this is the inaugural Friday Open Jam at Rock'n Joe.

Hi. Glad to see that this event was re-scheduled. Will singers have an option of using an instrumental CD if they choose to do so?

Hi Colleen, I spoke to the venue owner and he said they do not have a CD player, but if you have one, they can hook it up to their PA system.

Hi! Is it only for performers or can 'listeners' come too??

Absolutely for listeners! Come out and enjoy!

Hi Colleen, I will have to check with the venue owner and the musicians. Not sure if there is the capability of playing CDs. If the song is a standard, the musicians are very competent and can probably accompany you.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
