"In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson

Hi book lovers,

after the enjoyable adventures of Piet Barol in his light hearted journey from Amsterdam to South Africa we thought we want to dive a bit deeper into history and follow the story of love, terror and an American family in Hitler's Berlin.

We are going to read "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson.

Please note the change in location: we meet at Satis Bistro, 212 Washington Street - reservation is under Susan/Book Club

New York Times review:

“In the Garden of Beasts” has the clarity of purpose to see the Germany of 1933 through the eyes of this uniquely well-positioned American family. There are hindsight-laden books that see the rise of Hitler as a parade of telltale signs. There are individual accounts that personalize the atmosphere of mounting oppression and terror. But there has been nothing quite like Mr. Larson’s story of the four Dodds, characters straight out of a 1930s family drama, transporting their shortcomings to a new world full of nasty surprises.

We are meeting at 11:00am at Marco & Pepe's, 289 Grove Street - reservation is under "book club".

Looking forward to discussing this book!

Hi all, unfortunately Marco and Pepe won't take reservations - a bit risky for us as a group of 9-10 people. Any other favorite brunch places we should try out? I quite like Satis Bistro on 212 Washington Str.:

Amelia's is excellent, I think they will do a reservation for 10. Satis is a great choice too. Also Cityside Bistro on Greene Street might be an option. Let me know if you need help with reservations. Best, Barbara
