I met this org. at health fair at the King Center last year and finally they are able to speak to us about what they do.
The commission, comprised of individuals with and without disablitlites, provides an opportunity to participate in and influence public policy.
Make a difference in the lives of people with disabilites, and join a dedicated group of individuals who represnt the many people with with disabilites in our county and advise the board of Supervisors on disability-related issues.
The first speaker will be Ligia (pronounced "Lihia") Andrade who is the Chair of the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities' Legislation, Advocacy and Outreach Committee. She will discuss information about the Commission, our Mission and what we do along with some of our activities. For those who may be interested, she will also discuss how one can apply to become a Commissioner. This should take 10-15 minutes. The 2 other speakers are from one of our community partners, the Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities(CID). They will discuss their Work Incentive Planning & Assistance (WIPA) Program. This is a FREE service to help beneficiaries of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and/or Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) to make informed choices about going back to work or entering the workforce for the first time. This project provides clients with information about Work Incentives which may allow them to keep some or all of their cash benefits and medical benefits. Olayinka Popoola, is an Independent Living Generalist specializing in Deaf Advocacy and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) advocacy. She is also the in-house interpreter at CID and provides Deaf interpreting services for community partners throughout San Mateo County. Liezel Taube is the Coordinator for the Home Accessibility Modification (HAM) Program, a minor home modification for individuals with disabilities. Both Olayinka and Liezel are also Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) counselors. Their presentation will take up the remaining amount of time.
