Joburg Red Bus tour day part 1 (solid)(buy own ticket)

I can't seem to find a spot to squeeze this in any sooner, which is a shame. Anyway, I'm planning to do it once a month for 3 or 4 months, to make full use of the Jo'burg stops.

We need to be at Park Station at 10am so we can hop on at 10:20. Because of the odd hours of the James Hall Transport Museum, I will be skipping that stop until Part 2 of this meetup takes place.

So, we will stop at Gandhi Square at 10:34, hop on again at 11:14, stop at Carlton Centre at 11:28, hop on again at 12:08, stop at Santarama Miniland at 12:15, hop on again at 12:55, skip Gold Reef City (in all fairness, it's expensive to go in and you need a full day meetup for Gold Reef City) and head straight to the Apartheid Museum, our last stop, at 13:30. From there, we'll hop on whatever time is good and head back to Park Station to head home.

Remember, the R120 is ONLY for Red Bus and excludes any and all entry fees to the venues mentioned. I think you get a R10 discount on the Apartheid Museum ticket if you've arrived on the Red Bus.

Here's a helpful how-to-get-there for Park Station: http://www.jbtours.co.za/map_to_jhb_park_station.php

According to the website, entry fees are as follows:

Carlton Centre - R15

Santarama Miniland - R30

Apartheid Museum - R60

ITINERARY SUBJECT TO CHANGE

Part 2 of this meetup, in June, will include the James Hall Transport Museum, the Mining District Walk and the Newtown area (including, hopefully, the SAB World of Breweries Tour).

Hi, I saw on the citysightseeing website that Santarama miniland is closed for renovations until Sept 2013 - yay! It needs it! We should go again when they open to assess the changes.

Okay, buying tickets for Joleen, Lize +1, Navin, Shelley, Luis +1, Elain, Craig +1, Antonella and Peter. To everyone else, please be sure to buy your ticket ONLINE before Saturday. If you wait until you get there, the tickets are R150 instead and I'm not sure how they would take payment.

Done all that. Highly recommed the SAB Museum. Three free beers or cooldrinks. R60 entrance. Museum Africa Geology section also great, no entrance fee.

Yep, we will be doing all parts of the Red Bus route on different days (once every few months) and cover all the options eventually.

    Hi Lara,

Do we have to EFT you or can we buy our own tickets?

    July 8, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Hey. I prefer that people EFT me the cost of the ticket so I can make a group booking and ensure we get seats - we can request a date with a group booking whereas with individual buyers, you have to get to the bus and hope there are available seats. Either way, it's not a huge train-smash as I'm sure there'll always be seats available. So, if you prefer to buy your ticket directly from the website, you are welcome to do so. Here's the link: http://www.citysights...
Make sure you are buying for the Jo'burg Red Bus and not the Cape Town one.

      July 8, 2013

  • Lara de M.

Hey guys. I need you to do payment today so I can buy tickets. Have been away at Festival in Grahamstown and that's why the short notice. Please note that I will send a full email with the plan for the day as well as my banking details by about noon. Please do ONLY AN INTERNET TRANSFER (EFT) and no direct cash deposits. This is for the R120 for the Red Bus. This excludes all other costs, including the entry fees for the places we're stopping. I will explain in more detail on the email.

We are going to meet at Rosebank at 8:30 to start our day (to give you an idea) and travel via the Gautrain to Park Station. More details will be supplied later.

A Red Bus staff member will meet us at the Gautrain part of Park Station and walk with us to the bus (as the station has separate parts and is big and has a busy street to cross).

Work conference in Kimberely ...sad to miss this

    July 1, 2013

  • Lara de M.

Hey guys. This event has been moved a week earlier, as mentioned before (if I found a spot sooner). Also, I will honestly say that my nephew's birthday is on the 20 July date and I had forgotten.

Hi Lara. Just wanted to remind you to confirm about the actual Park Station (Bus and Metrorail) or Gautrain Park Station meeting point for this meetup.

      June 22, 2013

    • Nikki Q.

Cool then I can make it

      June 23, 2013

  • Lara de M.

Hi guys. Unfortunately I have to move this event to later in the year. I am now at an expo this weekend for work and can't make any other plans. Apologies. I've moved it to July for the time being (as I'll be away at Grahamstown Arts Festival for end June/beginning July) but if I find a spot to do it earlier, I will.

Hi there, I did this tour last month...it was awesum except for a few dissapointing 'attractions' like Santarama Miniland. The place is beyond run-down and really not worth visiting. SAB World of Breweries was closed for a private function and the Bono Science Lab was also closed for renovations.

    April 24, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Hi Sandra. Thanks for the info. I've recently heard a few horrible reviews of the Santarama Miniland venue. We'll see about a review of the itinerary closer to the time. Perhaps the Santarama people need the Red Bus arrivals' money to spruce up the place.
