Day in the CBD Part 1 (book browsing, Ethiopian lunch, art)(solid)

How about a Saturday morning/afternoon in the CBD. Many don't want to venture there in the evening but there are still nice things to do during the day. So, my suggestion is that we meet at 10am and start with a visit to the Collectors' Treasury (a massive book store with multiple levels and books standing in piles on every conceivable space) and then make our way to lunch at Little Addis (an Ethiopian cafe). Then, spend the last bit of time in the CBD before sundown browsing some artwork.

You can come to any of the parts of the meetup or all of them. Details and updates to follow!

A big, fat, bolded green tick for this one, thank you, Lara!

Enough activities to stimulate all the senses and good time allocation for it all. First time we had an Ethiopian lunch and we loved it. Finally got to browse in CTP too - overwhelming for a first timer! And then the Hotel. Great area to spend time and have fun.

Awesome. Will definitely be joining the next instalments in this series. Brilliant idea.

PS: Those directions of yours were much easier than the GPS ...

Pretty cool day. Glad we got a few people to come to CBD who'd never been before. And thanks to Bheki for being awesome and giving us an actual tour of the 12 Decades. As a result, we also found out about the tours they run to Ponte Tower and picnics they have every week on top of Carlton Centre. So we are definitely going to be doing those in the future. Very excited!

Hi guys. Please let me know who is joining for the Ethiopian lunch at Little Addis so I can give Kassa (the owner) some idea of our numbers. Remember, Ethiopian food is mostly eaten with your hand and comes served on a big flatbreak (called an injera - llooks like a spongy pancake) which you tear off and use to eat the food on top of it. There are a few other options on the menu too but mostly it is served in this way.

I'm absolutely swamped with marking second medical year student reports. I also live in Pretoria, so it's not just a case of quickly popping by for lunch and then continue to work. So sorry to cancel, was really looking forward to this meetup.

hi havent driven to CBD in ages. abit nervous about that. where does one park ?

    May 14, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Arts on Main is a really safe area with security guards (not just car guards but security guards) who walk up and down the area. Also, the place is often packed or busy so there are lots of people and cars everywhere. I will send out directions closer to the time on email. It is LITERALLY 1 km's drive from the M2 highway and that's the dodgiest part but only insofar as it has little signage, stop signs (for the stop streets) and street lights. However, we're going during the day so even better.

Guys, the Bioscope dudes were keen to do a movie for us in the afternoon (when nothing else was going on) but now they've changed their minds and opted instead for us to go to the 6pm movie showing there that day. However, this isn't going to work for what we're hoping to do with this event so looks like we'll be scrapping the movie part of the CBD day, which is unfortunate as that was the main aim :-(

We'll have to do a Bioscope outing on another day, perhaps. We can spend a little time in the afternoon after lunch browsing either through the 12 Decades Hotel (if the art rooms are open) or some of the art exhibits at Arts on Main or perhaps have a drink at the rooftop bar (also 12 Decades). We'll just cap our lunch off with some art and/or a drink.

Brilliant idea - the book store is a favorite

All of these places will be within walking distance of one another (no more than a couple hundred metres) and you can park your car at the very safe Arts on Main area and have no worries walking around Fox Street.

I just checked google maps. for some reason in my head I imagined having to walk to carlton centre? #SMH anyways google maps says 450km so ok you're not that mad :-D - if Bioscope gives go ahead i'll join for movie but will skip on bookshop and lunch.

      April 15, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Yes except not 450km but 450m.
