The 2013 Grahamstown National Arts Festival (solid)

  • June 27, 2013 · 4:00 AM
  • Grahamstown and Hogsback

Yep, it's early but we need to start saving and planning.

If, like me, you'll be going for the entire period, you're looking at approximately R5000. This is for 10 nights' accommodation, breakfast on most days (except when in Hogsback), petrol there and surrounds as well as back again, toll fees plus a smattering of event tickets (about 10-14 shows, depending).

Option A (the main plan - 7 leave days required):

Depart 4:30am on Thursday 27 June.

Arrive Gtown approximately 5-6pm.

Stay in Gtown for a few nights.

Spend Monday 1 July travelling to Bathurst to see the Big Pineapple and have lunch in the little seaside town of Port Alfred. Back in Gtown for late afternoon and evening shows.

Depart to Hogsback on Tuesday 2 July for 2 nights' stay.

Back to Gtown on Thursday 4 July for the rest of Festival.

Depart at 5am on Sunday 7 July for JHB. Arrive approximately 6-7pm.

Option B, C, D...:

-Instead of driving down with us, you can fly down to Port Elizabeth and catch one of the shuttles to Grahamstown. I can still organise your accommodation based on how long you want to stay but you'll have to organise your own flight ticket and shuttle booking.

-Instead of tagging along to Hogsback with us, you can stick around in Grahamstown and enjoy even more Festival madness.

-Instead of coming for the entire period, you can drive down with us and take a flight back home any time OR fly down toward the end and drive back with us.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgsfCWt77kbVdGtsZmpqMVM0Rmk3TDZjRVZrMEdCNFE&usp=sharing

I'll have to book and pay in full for the accommodation pretty early in the year if we want to all stay together in the same residence. This means that we'll finalise accommodation by end of February and at this point, cancellations will mean a loss of the entire accommodation cost so you'll need to be pretty sure that you're definitely going by end Feb.

Hey Jenno, when you gonna put up some of your pics from Gtown. It's a gross injustice that you should discriminate against the anti-facebookers. Those were some of the greatest times ever ever!!

I wanted to squeeze in so much in just 4 days... walking on the beach at Kenton-on-Sea, just relaxing, going to Addo Elephant National Park, soaking up the festival's atmopshere and seeing a variety of shows. Had fun meeting up with the group for a breakfast and some shows :-)

Sent en email to most who are active regarding the planning, about booking some of the main shows. Deadline for deciding and EFTing is Friday. Please let me know if you didn't get the email. I need to sort out the EFTs from those who are joining for the main shows so I can buy the tickets.

I'll have to confirm if I can make all 7 dyas but would liek to consider at least a long weekend

    1 · May 31, 2013

    • Lara de M.

No problem Nikki. There are a few people coming through for the first weekend only for 3-4 days. Lorne is flying to East London and hiring a car from there so you might want to club in with him since flights to East London seem to be cheaper.

Hi Lara. I have your cell number, will contact you when I get to Gtown on Saturday 29 June in the afternoon. I'll browse the programme and book whatever looks interesting. Will mainly meet up with the group for a bite to eat or a drink or two or dancing the night away. Leaving early 2 July.

    May 31, 2013

  • Lara de M.

A reminder to everyone that we are meeting this coming Sunday at Vanilla in Rosebank mall to discuss and finalise our planning. Remember to attend even if you're still just considering your options and even if you're not driving down with us.

Hi Guys and Girls. If anyone is interested in taking over my Gtown booking, please let me know. I've already paid Lara for accommodation in Gtown and Hog's Back from the 27th to the 6th and was planning on driving with her.

    May 27, 2013

    • Antonella

Hi Dominique, I dunno if you've found anyone to take your place yet but if not I'd be interested. Let me know. Thanks.

Hey guys, I've just sent an email with some info, stuff you need to know about funds you need to start keeping aside, and a request for a meeting in Rosebank on 2 June in the late afternoon. Lemme know. Thanks. (Check spam folder if you don't see it).

    May 8, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Cool, thanks. I've been to Fest abt 8 or 9 times and I also went to Rhodes so I know my way around but these are very practical tips for first-timers. Are you in Gtown right now?

      May 8, 2013

    • Chloe M.

Unfortunately not, but I was until November of last year. I've been to and worked for the festival so over the years I've noticed the really useful things they do, but never actually mention and try to tell people about them. I'll be down there from about a week before hand though, if anyone needs a guide... Also yay for old Rhodents!

      May 9, 2013

  • Abby

hi Lara I would love to attend the festival but wont be able to do the full period. I can do 4 nights but should I then book my own room etc. ?
where is everyone staying/itenary etc so that maybe I can organise myself around it ?
will try for the 28th June- 2nd July. thanks

    May 6, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Heya. A 4 night stay is definitely an option since there are a couple of people doing that. I am planning to call the university this week to sort out some stuff regarding the accommodation and a cancellation so will find out for you and let you know how to proceed. Hopefully we can swap out your attendance for the cancellation.

      May 8, 2013

  • Lorne P.

Hi Lara. Sorry to bother you. Please may I how much the rooms are per night and if you still have a room available for 28 June until 2 July (4 nights). If not no problem, I will get onto it. Many thanks.

    • Lara de M.

Hey Lorne. Did you get my email? Please check spam folder. Sent it yesterday, I think.

      March 27, 2013

Hi Lara. Thanks for checking up. It is in spam. I will reply to your mail.

      March 27, 2013

  • Chloe M.

Hey all, I'd love to meet up with you down in GHT, but don't worry about accommodation or transport things for me. I'm a post-grad student there so I'm taken care of. I'd just like to meet up if people are going to shows. I'm also happy to give tours of the town from a 'local's perspective' (I have lived there for the last 5 years, moved back up here 3 months ago), help people find the obscure little venues or the best places to eat, etc.

    March 19, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Cool, Chloe. Thanks. We'll see you there :-)

      March 25, 2013

  • Jai'prakash

Will just tag along to hogsback. Gtown stuff sorted :-)

    March 10, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Does that mean you're doing a show at Fest or just going for the spectacle?

      March 11, 2013

    • Jai'prakash

      Aye, doing a show :-)
Don't ask me any details just yet. All I know is I'm in something and accommodation, etc is already organised :-P

      March 12, 2013

  • Lara de M.

Okay, thanks to Benjamin, Janine W, Karen L, Jarrod, Joleen and Ilze for your payments. I know Jennifer is about to pay. thanks

    March 4, 2013

  • Lara de M.

Hey guys. Sent an email yesterday just around 5pm regarding loading your accommodation requirements on the google excel sheet OR specifying if you're not yet sure. Please check that email as soon as you can and during the course of today, I'm sending out emails to each person with their accomm total which was to be EFTed this weekend. Thanks!

    March 1, 2013

  • Lara de M.

Guys, as mentioned in the description above, but worth repeating: I am booking accommodation at the end of February and to secure the booking, 100% of the cost has to be paid over within 48 hours of making that booking. So start budgeting! Remember also that you have to be quite certain of your attendance or you'll lose the accommodation money. If that doesn't work for you, you're absolutely welcome to wait until closer to the time and see if you can still book in the same residence with all of us. You probably will still be able to but at least definitely still find accomm in res on Rhodes campus somewhere. So, I will require payment upfront of the accomm costs but will send out an email end Feb.

    February 5, 2013

  • Janine

Hi Lara, also book a single room for my buddy who will join us (3 nights, check in 29 June, check out 2 Jul)

    February 5, 2013

  • Janine

I'll catch up with you guys there over a longweekend. I already started to look for accommodation in B&Bs, but they are already booked. Hope that Grahamstown Uni still offers the residences as accommodation.

    January 30, 2013

    • Lara de M.

Yep, the B&Bs book up really quickly. We are almost certainly still going to be able to get accomm in Rhodes Uni res. If anyone is going to book for themselves, directly, be sure to request Jameson House in Oriel Hall so the whole group can be together :-)

      January 30, 2013

    • Janine

I added my details to the list

      February 5, 2013

  • Lara de M.

Okay, let's start planning. Please go HERE (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgsfCWt77kbVdGtsZmpqMVM0Rmk3TDZjRVZrMEdCNFE&usp=sharing) and complete the online excel doc so we can figure out who, when, where and how.

Hi Lara, at this stage I'm very uncertain whether I'll be able to afford to go at all, so don't know if you'd like me to fill the doc out at this stage? If I can I'd like to go for the full 10 days and do the side trip, driving, but preferably not with my car, staying in the res. Thanks for organising! :-)

      February 4, 2013

    • Lara de M.

No problem, Karen. Good to have just an indication because we might need more cars, for example.

      February 4, 2013

  • liemo

hi lara thanks. i wont be coming with the group but i will probably see you there.. just for 7 days . thanks

    January 30, 2013

  • Lara de M.

Accomm will be abt R3500 for 10 nights' stay (8 nights in Grahamstown, 2 nights in Hogsback), including breakfast on MOST days (breakfast not accounted for in Hogsback). If driving there and back with me or someone else, petrol comes to R600 pp with 4 people in the car (includes drive to Gtown, drive to Port Alfred, drive to Hogsback, back to Gtown and back to Jo'burg plus all toll roads). Leaves R1000 for tickets to shows (2 shows a day, on average - show prices vary, so you can easily do more if you go to a lot of Fringe shows). Excludes ALL other meals (except breakfasts in Grahamstown) and drinks. You can save R35 per day (on 8 of the days) by opting for the non-breakfast res accomm. If travelling by vehicle only one way, petrol R300 (i.e. you fly in or out and drive the other way). If you choose not to travel to Hogsback but stay in Grahamstown during that period, the difference in cost is only about R80-R120. Often, art shows, exhibitions, street theatre are all free.

    January 30, 2013

  • Lara de M.

@Rae and everyone else - please read the event description for all the necessary information. By 1 March, I'm going to start organising accommodation based on everyone's desired period. I won't be organising any travel other than those coming in my vehicle there and/or back so flight tickets/other vehicles will have to be organised by yourselves.

@lara do you usually stay at the residences?
saw there are some house option, if enough ppl you can rent out a house for about the same price of a res.

I'm keen but also want to make the trip to Lesotho in the snow happen, which will be about the same time.

    will ponder so long.

    November 29, 2012

    • Lara de M.

Heya. Yeah, there are a few house options but I've never successfully managed to have enough people to secure it and they are usually booked out super early. Also, what's nice about Res is it's super central and has enough bathrooms and hot water to keep everyone happy. So, I've basically given up on house idea and stick with Res. Only drawback is that you can't really successfully make food there but have to buy food/eat out all the time.

      November 29, 2012

    • Lara de M.

Oh and also at res everyone gets their own room with a basin, lockable door, cupboard space, single bed and heater.

      November 29, 2012

  • Naledi

    I definately want to go.
