The city of Walterboro,SC offers visitors the ultimate lowcountry wildlife experience, the Great Swamp Wildlife Sanctuary. Just a few miles from I-95, this environmental jewel combines history, culture, recreation, and education, in a southern lowlands setting. A complete nework of boardwalks, hiking and biking trails, provide a perfect vantage point to observe the diversity of wildlife inhabiting this black water bottomland. Located within the ACE Basin, the east coast's largest estuarine preserve, the 842-acre sanctuary features what may be the only "braided creek" swamp accessible to the public. The swamp consists of hardwood flats which are defined by a series of streams which "braided" their way through the area. Populations of wild turkey, deer, raccoons, beavers, otters, minks, opossum, foxes, and some wildcats are abundant. There is also a large, year-round population of song birds, as well as wading birds. This area serves as a stopover for transient and migrating birds.
We will meetup with interpreters who will lead group hikes to off boardwalk areas into the swamp. Bring water, trail snacks, and good hiking shoes. Also binoculars and camera for wildlife sightings. THIS OUTING IS "FREE" BUT PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. PLEASE NO PETS.
