The Essex Way Section 5 - Chappel & Wakes Colne to Dedham

The journey so far

Section 5 – 18 miles

The end time given for this event is the approximate time of arrival at Manningtree Station by taxi if you don’t stop for a drink in the pub at Dedham at the end of the hike.

Please read the Three Golden Rules of Joined Up Hiking.

Are you OK with those? All right, then you may continue...

This is a very long and rewarding hike, starting with a lovely winding stretch for some miles along the River Colne, then many more miles across the familiar open fields from one village and church to the next and on into the more wooded vales of Constable country, finishing our epic trek in the beautiful village of Dedham. Here we will stop for a drink or two before getting taxis to the nearest station at Manningtree for the journey home.

We will be out on the path for seven hours, including a stop for a picnic lunch. Bring a packed lunch and be prepared to keep going at a medium fast pace the whole day.

We meet up earlier than usual at Liverpool Street station in order to pack everything in.

This is a free event. Due to the high travel cost the usual £1 organizer fee is waived.

Some general recommendations and tips.

Full Itinerary with Estimated Timings

What an idyllic walk - and with such lovely people, and a great fast connection home from Stratford! Thanks to all and to Chris for organising.

Hi everyone, the forecast is for almost uninterrupted sunshine all day and very warm. Bring plenty of water and sun protection.

We will have about an hour in the pub at the end. I will book taxis for 6:25 to take us back to Manningtree for the 6:53 train. If you may want to leave earlier or later let me know.

    See you tomorrow!
