The Greensand Way Section 8 - Holmwood to Shalford

  • This location is shown only to members

The journey so far

Section 8 – 18 miles

The end time given for this event is the approximate time of arrival at Shalford at the end of the hike.

Please read the Three Golden Rules of Joined Up Hiking.

Are you OK with those? All right, then you may continue...

This is another very long hike and very hilly. Be prepared for a strenuous all-day trek at a consistent medium fast pace.

For the first few miles we head West out of Holmwood up the slopes and deep into the woods to find our way back onto the Greensand Way, then we follow it up and up right to the top of Leith Hill, emerging for panoramic views at the highest point on the Greensand Ridge and the second highest point in South-East England. For a small fee (£1 as far as I can ascertain) you can go up inside the tower to 1000 feet and an even better view.

We will have a short well-earned stop here. There is a kiosk with light refreshments but no toilets. We will have our main lunch stop in a village a couple miles further on, where you can either have your own packed lunch or go to one of the two pubs.

After the one-hour stop we continue on through the glorious Surrey Hills with two more tough ascents to above 800 feet and way back down again.

I am planning to get to Shalford just in time to miss the 19:03 train so that we will all have to go to the pub nearby for a drink or two before getting the next one at 20:03.

Some general recommendations and tips.

So how much of the day was it actually raining for, and how muddy was it?

Hi everyone! I surprisingly enjoyed the hike :) I hated the horrible climbing part as I have quite a weight to carry with me but apart from that I loved it. Fortunately there was a lot of flat terrains and descents where I could even catch my breath sometimes :D And the company! You made my day! All of you. I really had a great time. Cheers!

Hi everyone. There is light rain predicted for most of the day and it will feel cold in the northerly wind. I therefore assume most people will now want to have lunch in the pub and there are two pubs close to each other that we can split ourselves between. There is plenty of time for lunch.

My phone number in case you need it is 07971357104. See you at Victoria or Holmwood tomorrow!

    Hi guys

This is getting frustrating! This weekend I am NOT elsewhere, and would have come on the walk, but the weather forecast is dreadful. No doubt all of you who do go on the walk will tell me how bright and sunny it turned out to be. Then, in a fit of regret, I will come on the next one and get drenched!

Just found out I can't make it on Saturday, which means there's space for a fourth person to join Kevin's group at Clapham Junction. Have a fantastic time and see you for the next section!

  • Alcina

Hi Kevin, please count me in as the 4th person! Thank you.

    • Kevin

      Ok Alcina you are in

      September 10, 2013

  • Kevin

Hi we are a group of 3 looking for a 4th person to join us at Clapham Junction to get on the train there, rather than from Victoria. The deal is I will buy the groupsave return train tickets and post the exact time of the train and platform number on Saturday morning. Train will probably be departing around 09:38 from platform 15.

    • Kevin

You are already 1 of the 3 Laura. So still need 1 other person.

Hi Christopher, just to let you know that I will join you directly at Holmwood station. I will be coming from Woking and it suits me better this way rather than going to Victoria first.
    Looking forward to it.
