The Essex Way Section 7 - Manningtree to Harwich

The journey so far

Section 7 – 16.5 miles

The end time given for this event is the approximate time of arrival at Harwich Green at the end of the hike.

Please read the Three Golden Rules of Joined Up Hiking.

Are you OK with those? All right, then you may continue...

This is the last and by no means the least of our seven hikes on the Essex Way, which began in the mud of December last year and reached a midpoint in the parched fields of the agricultural heartland during the heat-wave in July.

This section has a unique flavour as the majority of the route is alongside or near the coastline. We follow the Stour Estuary out of Manningtree most of the way to Harwich and then cut across to the other side of the peninsula for the final approach to the finishing point of this 81 mile long-distance trail, bumped up to a round 100 miles with the (mostly deliberate) scenic detours in the Joined Up Hiking version.

We will be out on the path for seven hours, including a stop for a picnic lunch. Bring a packed lunch and be prepared to keep going at a medium fast pace the whole day.

We meet up earlier than usual at Liverpool Street station in order to pack everything in.

There is a £1 fee payable to the organizer on the day.

Some general recommendations and tips.

I am sooo jealous! But I had to stay home as I have some pain in my foot and was afraid to risk going. I hope next time I'll make it. Cheers!

My thanks to Chris for organising this walk.

It's the first time I've attempted the North face of the "Essex Alps" :-)

The walk was made by all the lovely, chatty, sociable people who came along.

Highlight of the day:Walking at the back! :-))

(This in reference to a comment made in the pub ) Lol !

Thanks for organising Chris. A successful hike in many ways - everyone completed the 16.5 miles (with a few doing an extra mile), brilliant weather throughout, nice fit lot of happy chirpy hikers (special appearance of friendly Spanish folks), good pace all

    Looking forward to it.
    Just one question:
Where exactly in the station do you usually meet?
    Near any shop?

    • Christopher

You can't miss it. Directly by the ticket office near a sign saying meeting point.
