The Three Castles Path
This is a short long-distance path of 60 miles, which will tide us over from November until early 2014. The three historic structures that give the path its name are: Windsor Castle at the start which needs no introduction, Odiham Castle, a bizarre-looking remnant of the thirteenth century at the half-way point, and Winchester Castle at the end, of which the thirteenth century Great Hall stands impressively preserved.
Section 1 – 18 miles
The end time given for this event is the approximate time of arrival at Crowthorne Station at the end of the hike if you do not stop for a drink at the pub near the end.
Please read the Three Golden Rules of Joined Up Hiking.
Are you OK with those? All right, then you may continue...
This section goes through woodland of one kind or another almost the whole way, including a completely straight 2.3 mile tree-lined walk from the castle towards Snow Hill through Windsor Great Park. The terrain is gently undulating.
It is a very long hike to be doing at this time of the year. Hence the early start, and there is no indoor stop for lunch. We will be having a picnic lunch out on the path. There is a possible pub stop just over a mile before the end of the hike. Those who take this option will have to find their way along the path to the railway station in the dark or get a cab. Those of us who do not stop in the pub will get to Crowthorne station by 16:30 before darkness sets in.
Only sign up for it if you are sure you can manage the distance and the medium fast pace throughout the day.
You must bring your own packed lunch.
There is a £2 charge payable to the organizer on the day.
Some general recommendations and tips.
