The Three Castles Path

This is a short long-distance path of 60 miles, which will tide us over from November until early 2014. The three historic structures that give the path its name are: Windsor Castle at the start which needs no introduction, Odiham Castle, a bizarre-looking remnant of the thirteenth century at the half-way point, and Winchester Castle at the end, of which the thirteenth century Great Hall stands impressively preserved.

Section 1 – 18 miles

The end time given for this event is the approximate time of arrival at Crowthorne Station at the end of the hike if you do not stop for a drink at the pub near the end.

Please read the Three Golden Rules of Joined Up Hiking.

Are you OK with those? All right, then you may continue...

This section goes through woodland of one kind or another almost the whole way, including a completely straight 2.3 mile tree-lined walk from the castle towards Snow Hill through Windsor Great Park. The terrain is gently undulating.

It is a very long hike to be doing at this time of the year. Hence the early start, and there is no indoor stop for lunch. We will be having a picnic lunch out on the path. There is a possible pub stop just over a mile before the end of the hike. Those who take this option will have to find their way along the path to the railway station in the dark or get a cab. Those of us who do not stop in the pub will get to Crowthorne station by 16:30 before darkness sets in.

Only sign up for it if you are sure you can manage the distance and the medium fast pace throughout the day.

You must bring your own packed lunch.

There is a £2 charge payable to the organizer on the day.

Some general recommendations and tips.

Hi all. Amanda and I felt bad about not doing the walk last Sat, so we did it yesterday. PERFECT weather, at least in the morning. Chris had kindly sent us the GPS route and, after we diligently followed that to the minute, and get to Crowthorne station at 16.30 what happens? The blasted 16.39 is CANCELLED and we have to stand around like idiots in the cold waiting for an hour!

Hi Christopher, sorry I had to cut the walk short yesterday. I received a phone message from home just went we were leaving Ascot. I got involved answering, sending messages back and forth and got left behind , in any case it was sort of an emergency and my presence was required in London. I walked to Ascot station and cached a train back. I did not had a chance to pay you for the activity, I will do it next time I see you. I am sooo sad I didnt get to complete it the first part of the path.

Rain again! At the moment the forecast is for light or heavy rain most of the time we will be walking. And there is sure to be lots of mud! You must have proper boots so you can plough through the mud regardless, as we need to keep up a good pace the whole day.

Remember it's a packed lunch. In dire necessity we can take refuge under the pedestrian underpass at Ascot racecourse to eat it.

Also bring a torch if you have one, just in case we do get held up.

See you tomorrow (if you can still make it). My phone number in case you need it is[masked]
