This is a trip away of three and a half days' hiking, some of it very strenuous, continuing along the dramatic and scenic north Devon coast and into the northern part of Cornwall.
Everyone can walk at their own pace in smaller groups if preferred as the path is well signposted and as long as you keep to the left of the sea you cannot go far wrong. I also have a few maps to dish out.
Four overnight stays in B&B / hotel / youth hostel along the route. You must be okay to share a room with one or more others of the same gender. There are one or two single rooms at some of the places and twins or doubles for the couples. All accommodation is booked.
Your luggage will be transported for all 4 days of hiking at a group discount rate. You will find it a great relief to be carrying just a light day pack on the numerous steep ascents and descents along the cliffs.
The RSVP deposit covers the amount I am paying in advance as a deposit for the accommodation. The total cost of bed and breakfast for the four nights altogether will be about £125 each. We will pay the balance at each place on departure.
I will book the luggage transfer and outward train travel and request payment for that. This will be about £50 each altogether.
That comes to about £175 altogether i.e. £46 deposit + £30 rail journey out + £20 luggage transfer + £79 remaining balance for accommodation. Your other costs will be lunch, dinner, drinks, incidental expenses, and your return travel, as below:
For the return journey on Wednesday 10th September we take the 8:50 am bus from Bude to Exeter St David's, arriving at 10:55 am. The fare is about £6, payable on boarding. There are no advance sales.
Everyone returning to London by train has bought their ticket from Exeter or I have bought it for them and been re-imbursed.
Saturday September 6th
Travel from London to Barnstaple by train. 9:06 train from Paddington. Change at Exeter St Davids. Arrive at 12:35 pm.
Section 6 - Barnstaple to Bideford
11 miles. Ascent 380 feet, Descent 400 feet.
We will get our luggage picked up and then do this very flat stretch in the afternoon. We will stay the night in three separate places close by the harbour in Bideford.
Sunday September 7th
Section 7 - Bideford to Clovelly
19.5 miles. Ascent 3670 feet, Descent 3380 feet.
This is a really long day's hike, ending in the very picturesque village of Clovelly.
We will all stay in the annexe of a hotel in the village.
Monday September 8th
Section 8 - Clovelly to Elmscott
13 miles. Ascent 3770 feet, Descent 3640 feet.
A medium length day's hike but very hilly. Reputedly the most rugged 16-mile stretch of the whole coastal path starts about half-way along.
We will all be staying at the well-appointed youth hostel half a mile in from the cliff-top. This is self-catering. There is a store at the youth hostel for us to buy the food for cooking our dinner.
Tuesday September 9th
Section 9 - Elmscott to Bude
Again, a medium length hike but long enough as the path continues its way from cliff-top down to beach level, up again and down again.
14 miles. Ascent 3550 feet, Descent 3960 feet.
We will all stay in a guest house near the centre of town.
Wednesday September 10th
Travel from Bude to London by bus and train. We will get the 8:50 am bus as it is a 2 hour journey to Exeter right across Devon. The train journey from there to London is 2 to 3.5 hours depending on the train.
