The Vanguard Way
The Vanguard Way is an attractive and varied route from London to the South coast created by the Vanguards Rambling Club and officially launched in 1981. We are doing one section at a time on six day trips, adding about another 20 miles altogether with links to and from railway stations.
Section 3 – 12.6 miles
Unlike the previous two hikes there is no pub stop until later in the day, so it is essential to bring your own packed lunch.
We head straight out into the fields from Lingfield station, taking some minor paths to rejoin the Vanguard Way where we left it the last time. Then it’s up the partially wooded slopes of Dry Hill, close to where three counties and three long-distance paths meet, pretty much the epicentre of hiking South of London. We continue for several miles through classic undulating terrain, stopping somewhere on a grassy bank for our lunch.
Later we reach our southernmost point of the day at Forest Row for some refreshment in a pub before the leaving the Vanguard Way for a further pleasant stretch of walking into East Grinstead.
We will be going at a medium fast pace throughout.
There is a £1 charge payable to the organizer on the day
