The Vanguard Way

The Vanguard Way is a North-South trail from East Croydon to the Sussex Coast keeping to quiet footpaths and country lanes the whole way. Between the two end points in London and Newhaven the biggest place it passes directly through is Forest Row, at the edge of Ashdown Forest. At this point there’s still forty miles to go, but from now on it’s almost pure Vanguard Way with only one small detour as the rural railway stations are situated close to the path for our connections to and from home.

Section 4 – 16 miles

This is the most challenging hike of the six, something to really test your fitness. It’s just under 16 miles in total, up and over the hills of the High Weald, with a mammoth 11 miles to cover before we get to a pub stop.

From East Grinstead we take some minor paths through fields and then a bit of the Forest Way, a stretch of disused railway line, to rejoin the Vanguard Way where we left it last time. Then it’s up into the wooded slopes and heathland of Ashdown Forest. Somewhere along the way we stop for our packed lunch. We eventually come out the other side for a well-earned afternoon pub stop.

Then it’s another hefty 4.85 miles through the rolling countryside to the end of the walk at Buxted.

It is essential to bring a packed lunch on this hike.

See the page about Rail Tickets for The Vanguard Way Sections 4 to 6 for your cheapest ticket option.

There is the usual £1 charge payable to the organizer on the day.

A wonderful hike, my favourite part of the Vanguard way so far. There were some fantastic views, a real delight. We came across some majestic looking horses and even a snake!

Yet again the actual weather was better than the forecast. It turned out perfect for hiking, and what a hike! Great and varied from countryside from beginning to end.

Weather forecast for tomorrow - cool with showers and sunny spells - what more could you want for a great day's hike? It could be very wet underfoot - bring spare socks in case boots prove not entirely waterproof.

Meet from 8.45 am at Victoria Station for those meeting there, in the usual place by the ticket office and ticket machines.

My phone number in case of any difficulty on the day is 07971357104.

Thank you very much for your response. That's very reassuring. Unfortunately, I can't make it this weekend but I would love to join the group for the next event. Have a nice walk.

It's not unusual at all. Most people come to meetup events on their own, and this is a nice small group where you will easily feel at home with people who share your interest in hiking. So don't worry, just come along.

    Hi all,

My name is Murielle. I am 24 and French. I have never met people through meet up and I feel a bit awkward to come on my own for the next event. But I am definitely interested in hiking and I think it is the most important. Is it unusual to come alone?

You have a couple more days to buy a Southern DaySave ticket online for £12 for 7th July if you're definitely coming on this hike. See the event details above for further info and the link to the Southern Rail website. Otherwise buying the 2 singles on the day will cost you a total of £10.95 in a group of 4 up to £21.90 on your own. Get into groups when you arrive at Victoria station on the day as usual.
