The Sussex Border Path Section 3 - Petersfield to Liphook

The Sussex Border Path

The blue trail in the map below is the first seven stages of the Sussex Border Path in the Joined Up Hiking version, including the links to and from railway stations.

At the bottom left is the circuit we did of Thorney Island in section 1, and at the right-hand end is Gatwick airport. We might possibly get this far by the end of the year if we continue into the late Autumn / early Winter. There are at least another five stages continuing Eastwards after that.

Section 3 – 14 miles

We crossed the South Downs in section 2 but we’re still in the scenic landscape of the South Downs National Park for the whole of today’s walk, which is divided evenly into two segments of seven miles each, with a welcome pub stop for lunch at the highest point of 500 feet.

The first half is mostly open country, getting back to the Border Path from Petersfield, climbing steadily later and entering the wooded wilderness of Durford Heath. The route after lunch drops down again and passes alongside or through a number of wooded areas on rolling terrain, until we get to Liphook and turn off for the station.

You can either order lunch in the pub or eat your packed lunch somewhere nearby.

We will walk at our usual medium fast pace, with the occasional short stop to regroup and look around.

There is a £1 charge payable to the organizer on the day.

Hi - RSVP's have closed so wondered if I could sneak in under the IT curfew as were and join you at Petersfield station for the walk.

The forecast is very good for tomorrow - cool, dry and mainly sunny - but it's advisable to bring rain gear just in case. See you all at Waterloo, or at Petersfield, just outside the entrance to the railway station. My phone number in case of any difficulty on the day is[masked]

Hi Rosaline, yes you can join us at Petersfield station. I'm sure one or two others will as well. You should easily be able to recognize the group. I will post any other relevant details and my phone number nearer the time.

I look forward to meeting you and others on their first walk with group.
