The Sussex Border Path Section 5 - Witley to Rudgwick

The journey so far...

Section 5 – 13.5 miles

The end time given for this event is the arrival in Guildford by bus after finishing the hike at Rudgwick.

Walking out of Witley station we're straight out into a hinterland of woods and pastures for the whole day, passing through one or two small villages, and stopping somewhere out on the path for lunch. We’ll make another stop in the afternoon at a pub for a drink before the final four miles into Rudgwick. There are no train services here for miles around, so for the first time we resort to a local bus service to get back to a town (Guildford) for the rail connections home.

We will go at our usual medium fast pace with the occasional short stop to regroup and look around. You must bring a packed lunch.

Full Itinerary with Estimated Timings

Meet Up: Arrive between 8:40 and 9:00 a.m. at Waterloo Station, by the ticket office. I will be wearing the floppy hat and moustache for recognition. Get into groups of 4 for buying tickets.

Buy Ticket: Off-Peak Return to Witley. The price is £18.60 for 1 adult, down to £9.30 each in a group of 4.

The total travel cost for the day includes a further £3.50 for a bus ticket. See Return Travel below.

Outward Travel: 9:15 a.m. train from Waterloo platform 14 to Witley platform 2. Arrive at 10:09.

Meet for Start of Hike: From 10:10 to 10:15 a.m. at Witley Station.

Part 1: 9.5 miles. 4 hours including a stop for lunch out on the path.

Afternoon Stop: A pub stop for up to 30 minutes.

Part 2: 4 miles. Maximum 1 hours 40 minutes.

End of Hike: Arrive at Rudgwick King’s Head Bus Stop by 16:25.

Post-Hike Refreshment: The King’s Head in Rudgwick i.e. just by the bus stop.

Return Travel: The return journey to London is in two parts:

(1) Rudgwick to Guildford by bus or minibus.

The Arriva 63 Bus leaves Rudgwick at 16:28. Ticket price £3.50.

It arrives at Guildford Friary Bus Station at 17:15. Then it's a 5 minute walk to Guildford Railway Station.

7-8 people can go instead by minibus, from the King's Head car park. This will cost £4-£5 each. I've booked it for 16:30, just in case we couldn't all get on the bus, although it shouldn't be a problem according to a local source.

The minibus will get to Guildford Railway Station at about 17:00. If you're very keen to take this option let me know in advance.

For anyone stopping a while at the King’s Head there are 3 later buses: at 17:12 in the other direction to Horsham Bus Station, and at 17:28 and 18:16 to Guildford.

(2) Guildford to London Waterloo, using the return part of the ticket to Witley. Frequent trains, journey time 35-40 minutes.

A great walk with mud all the way. I loved the climb of the muddy hill. We had a good laugh and I look forward to part 6.

The only bad thing was the mud, a bit too much, but that's nobody's fault and unavoidable!

Would anyone be intending or preferring to set off from Clapham Junction station or meet up there rather than Waterloo? If there were at least 3 of us doing so (ideally 4) then we could make the same saving on the tickets. The train would go through at 9.22 so if we were to meet in the main ticket hall at 9am we could link up?

Great, I'll see you there. By the main ticket hall, I mean the main entrance where there is the costa coffee,M&S, West Conwall Pasty etc. I'll be by the ticket machines.
