The journey so far

Section 7 – 11.5 miles

The end time given for this event is the approximate time of arrival at Gatwick Airport railway station at the end of the hike.

This is a very accessible section and for at least 9 miles it’s an attractive country walk. The last bit is for motorway enthusiasts and plane spotters only but it does mean a quick journey home from Gatwick Airport, just over 30 minutes into Victoria, arriving back by 5 pm.

We’ll be walking in the reverse direction again, from East to West, so that we can put in a good 7.5 miles along a variety of paths, tracks and country lanes to work up an appetite for our lunch stop in the pub. Fully refreshed, we will emerge into the December air for a good stretch across the fields and onto the church and small lake of Burstow where we will drink in the last of the rural atmosphere before heading towards our destined encounter with the M23.

As on the last hike the hills are negligible but the mud may be considerable in certain places. We’ll keep to a good Joined Up Hiking pace. As it’s our final get-together on the Sussex Border path before Christmas and it could be nippy outside it’s expected that everyone will want to order lunch in the pub.

This is a good opportunity for any first-timers to meet up with the regulars and see what the group is like.

Meet Up: Arrive between 9:00 and 9:20 a.m. at Victoria Station, by the ticket office. I will be wearing the floppy hat and moustache for recognition. Get into groups of 4 for buying tickets if you haven't already bought one in advance. See below.

Buy Ticket:

On the Day

As the journey out and back are on different lines you need to buy two separate singles:

  • £11.70 anytime single from London Victoria to East Grinstead, down to £5.85 each in a group of 4.
  • £13.20 off-peak single from Gatwick to London Victoria, down to £6.60 in a group of 4.

In Advance

A DaySave for £12 or an All-Network Downlander for £12.50 gives you unlimited travel for the day on these lines. So you don’t need to be in a group but you need to buy the ticket online in advance.

Alternatively for just £6 you can request to be on a Group DaySave ticket. I will have the ticket for the group of 4 already purchased.

Here are the full details of these advance purchase options.

Hi, yes I'm assuming everyone will want some pub food, so it's already arranged. Only tell me if you don't want to eat anything.

Good, better to tell my friends. I have been told we'll enjoy a sunny day, surely very cold so a warm pub food is very welcome. Thanks for thinking of that.

Hi all, if you're meeting at Victoria and want to be on a Group DaySave ticket for £6 you must request my bank details and transfer £6 by this Saturday December 1st. If you're getting the train from somewhere else you may want to get your own DaySave for £12 - it also must be purchased a week in advance. See the Buy Ticket in Advance section above and follow the links.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
