The Vanguard Way in Retrospect

A Look Back on The Vanguard Way

The Vanguard Way was the first long-distance path undertaken by Joined Up Hiking, and we completed it as planned in six separate days out from May 20th to August 4th.

Four of us - the organizer Christopher, Matthew, Sanjiv and Mathias - were ever-present, joining the six walks together to complete the whole of the Vanguard Way plus quite a few "extra miles". Mathias and Sanjiv were usually out in front setting the pace but Matthew made sure to stick close to them in the final stretch on day 6, and in true Olympic spirit put on a burst of speed to pass the finishing post at Newhaven first.

Others were prevented from doing all the walks but another keen cohort of six hikers did three sections each and made a great contribution - Amanda, Denise, Philip, Monika, Nikii and Stanislav. Philip has meanwhile filled in the missing sections and completed the entire route as well.

There were many others who enjoyed one or two sections including some enthusiastic new recruits on the last couple of walks. A special thanks for all the comments, ratings, uploaded photos (Deven, Joanna, Patricia, Nikii, Ricky, Ash, Philip), route recording and occasional fast group leading (Mathias) and unique time-lapse photo record (Mark).

The total distance covered on the complete route from London to the South Coast was 90 miles, averaging out at 15 miles each day. 66 were on the Vanguard Way itself, plus 24 getting to and from the railway stations and making the odd inadvertent detour. The scenery was pleasant and varied, and generally agreed to have got better and better as it went along. There were some very muddy stretches, but the weather itself could hardly have been better for walking. The dismal forecasts always perked up by the day of the hike itself and we encountered only a few smatterings of rain here and there.

It all ended on a high note on a glorious sunny day as we reached the coast to take in the spectacular views. Back in London a good contingent remained to celebrate completion of the final leg, which coincided nicely with spectacular British Olympic success on the telly, cheered on ecstatically by the whole pub.
