I'd like to propose a talk on Software Estimation. This is a very important topic for most software developers, but especially for developers who have a boss. Which is probably most of us :)
Ideally this should be more of a discussion than a presentation, because we all know the pains of project schedules and man-hour estimations. From my side I'll present some of the theory, math and realities of software estimation, along with examples (of course).
From the audience's side it would by handy to hear what techniques they've used in the past and how successful the techniques were.
Key concepts will include:
- What are estimates (as opposed to targets or commitments)
- What are good estimates
- A quiz to test your estimation skills
- Self-induced estimation pressures
- A Few estimation techniques, with focus on Monte Carlo based estimation
- Using historical data to calibrate your estimations.
