vi & vim: text editing the Unix way

Join us for a talk about one of the most popular and ubiquitous text editors on *nix systems, vi.

Originally written by Bill Joy in 1976, vi is the de facto standard text editor on Unix. Vim is an extended ("iMproved") version of the editor that provides some additional functionality. Vim is likely to be what you get when you type "vi" into your shell.

This is the second in a series of talks on text editors on Linux. The previous talk in this series was on emacs.

Well considering i didn't really have an idea of the difference between VI/VIM and EMAC, I learnt a lot at the talk. Turns out i am an EMAC user ha ha. Thank you Midiane for the info

A little dissapointing. We need a new projector first of all. Well done to Midiane for speaking - it's always hard to do it. That being said I didn't see any compelling reason for me to use VI / VIM - which was what I was hoping to see.

It was a good demonstration however could possibly have benefited from a clear projector.

It might be worth checking out the thread that the DeveloperUG had - they did a workshop on vi/vim and there are some useful links http://www.meetup.com/DeveloperUG/events/98335052/

Thanks to all those that came tonight. And thanks to Midiane for a great topic and talk. I can definitely say I feel a bit more "savVI" having heard it. Feel free to post your vi-related links and tricks.

We're still looking for a topic and speaker for next week, so please e-mail/message me if you'd like to give it a shot: [masked]

We had this topic before if I my memory serves me right, but of course vi is so vast we could have meetings until the end of time and never get bore.
