So who won and what were their ideas??? I had to leave early due to the noise. I still feel the pounding , it's extremely unhealthy for me ! Thank you to Forbes for inspiring me to do a second Hackathon, and thank you to my Team, David, Miguel, and Holly!

Btw, Steve are you the Steve Falcon I met? I realize actually I have no idea who the Forbes hosts were, except for the CTO :).

      December 14, 2013

    • Steve

I believe in focusing on hackathon not on forbes support team :) thats why we blended up and tried to help as much as possible. hope you enjoyed it and, yes, i am Steve ( falconeer here on meetUp). I personally believe that the world is not about me about but about me focusing on the world to be a better place.

  • David J.

I walked out at 5:30 but realized later I could have had something done by 8:30. I received a great deal of technical support. I am looking forward to the next one with a new and improved API (the current one was adequate for the event).

Will there be a way to connect a Galaxy S4 to a projector for a Live Demo of a mobile app or should we plan on taking screen shots?

Baris, I cant help liking you more and more. sorry for misspelling your name a few time. i am aware of apps you mentioned - we are partners with mongodb, but we are looking for something different and maybe a different approach. maybe we should chat over coffee tomorrow am. i should be on the floor at 10-10:05

      December 12, 2013

    • Baris C.

:-) I have some deadlines so I guess I will be there around 10:30. I will def. try and find you then!

1.F# anyone? I would like to work on a team, and yesterday I had an idea for building a data adapter in F# [track one, ingestion of content]. If anyone is interested in working with me I'd love to pursue that idea! Otherwise I assume it will be easier to find partners to work in Python or Ruby.

2.Steve, will these Forbes items be accessible via the API?

Boris, you nailed it, better or simpler or different or making zapi work. there are more solutions out there as well

We are trying to decide exactly what type of hack to do. Will their be any location data included?

    December 11, 2013

    • Steve

hey David, i believe there will be location data (lat/long) in api with people profiles, same data as used on forbes lists

      December 11, 2013

    • Steve

      keyPeopleList: [
      { lastName: "",
      firstName: ""
      naturalId: "",
      name: "",
      type: "person",

    Continuing...
    2. we are challenging status quo. any crazy app idea with pigLatin data, please bring it. world needs thinkers/doers more than talkers/doubters.
    3. more on tracks..they seem to be self explanatory at least to me :). but please fire away questions! as i mentioned to Margaret and Anne, we will all hack together, hopefully in teams and do it in less than 8 hours ( seems a long time to me). 4. if you are an engineer, i assume you are github'er but it does not matter what's your preference for sourcecode

so please, please ask questions and i cant wait to hang_out /hack_away with you at forbes hackathon.

man, i wrote more than all my emails combined this week, forgive typos if any
    cheers!

    December 10, 2013

    • Steve

Anne, thanks for the questions (really!). 3.i ran quite a few experiments with mobile ( some of them saw the light of day, some never did) and will be happy to share. i would be excited to see the app that tailors to the way people consume the news on mobile devices( attention span short, interests shift all the time, fear of missing out, etc..). these are my thoughts but i am sure collectively we will be 100 times smarter. so this is just general direction. we want to be blown away by creativity and out of the box thinking.

      December 11, 2013

    • Steve

      4. is a free style. you can check forbes.com and i will be on the floor from 10 am to collaborate but this track is "anything goes". more of a pitch your crazy idea. either yours truly or somebody smarter than me will be on this track. i can give it more thought but it was supposed to be a real freestyle:) please ask more!

      December 11, 2013

  • Steve

hey guys! cant wait to see you all on friday!
a few notes as meetup allows to post.

    1. to follow up on apis for track 2 and 3 a bit more->it is json - makes it nice and easy i assume. forbes api ninja blinked and i snagged one from his treasure chest: a simple example for the stream of content...
    http://apis.forbes.com/hackathon-preview-articles/?api_key=m2266xxamss9yy6vttd79fq6.
i might post another example tomorrow if Louie, the api ninja, blinks again. apis will return articles and dev data on people/places/companies used for world famous forbes lists. it will be so cool and interesting to see what we all can do with this data!
tracks 1 and 4 will be extreme tech marvels too.
forbes engineers and partners/sponsors should be available on the floor during registration for intros and any additional help you might need...
on friday, apis should be posted somewhere handy

In Startup Weekend, their are developers, designers, and business and marketing. How are the teams made up here?

    1 · December 6, 2013

    • Margaret O.

My Startup Weekend experience is teamwork to cover all the bases. I have been on 2 first place winning teams.

      December 9, 2013

    • Steve

Margaret, i think it would extremely cool if teams are formed. as far as i know there will be some time between registration and kick off where we all meet and can form teams based on our interests. i cant wait to meet all of you! maybe you and i can start the discussion here and figure out people interests which will help in building teams. we are all excited but, ofcourse, success will happen only when we all work together. i have no doubt that we will build a cool community of thinkers, tinkerers, hackers and friends

      December 9, 2013

  • Steve

the tracks are guidelines and creativity is more than welcome. api's are rest, and forbes tech staff will be on the floor to help. hackers are welcome to use forbes apis or any data.
as far as teams, everybody is welcome to form a team or hack individually. engineers from sponsors are planning to drop by.
the coolest and bravest thinking always wins

    December 9, 2013

    • Anne M.

hi Steve, thank you for your notes. Are the "Forbes api's" public? I cannot see any publicly available Forbes API's via a Google search. If they are private, does that mean our work cannot be published on Github?

      December 9, 2013

    • Steve

Anne, we are working to make them public by friday. and we also believe in sharing the code, we 'git it' too!

      2 · December 9, 2013

  • David J.

    To the above: d'accord

Also, if these are specific projects, what are the languages or is it REST and, if so, are there language samples?

    1 · December 8, 2013

  • David S.

"Attendees will have full access to our suite of content, statistics and list data APIs. "

What does this mean? Where is the documentation of the API's and what content and in what form? We don't want to spend the 8 hours learning how to work with these API's and then have nothing to show.

I don't mean to be difficult, but if you can provide specifics to each statement you will get a vastly better result out of this Hackathon. Even if we don't have access until Friday, a quick read of the documentation will give us an idea of what we can offer.

    Thanks so much.

    2 · December 8, 2013

    • Anne M.

I agree. I'm wondering if Forbes is using this hackathon to unveil an API, since none is yet advertised as best you and I can tell. The NYTimes has a huge well-documented API, eg http://developer.nyti... . For Forbes, we're not even sure which aspects of the web/content they plan to expose. I hope we find out soon.

      December 8, 2013

  • Anne M.

Does Forbes have a Developer API, or is this Hackathon to use other API's that might be of general interest to Forbes?

    1 · December 6, 2013

    • Anne M.

I guess what I am asking is exactly what does this mean; "3. Compelling use of the technical products offered by Forbes." Which products are dev-friendly and how do we research them? thank you!

      December 6, 2013

    • David S.

I would like to know more or less the same thing

      1 · December 7, 2013

  • David S.

So I am reading the Rules and it talks about submitting an application. Is there something that needs to be submitted other than the RSVP to the Meetup Group Event???

    December 3, 2013

    • Forbes H.

No, all you need to do is RSVP to this Meetup Event. We look forward to seeing you next Friday!

      December 4, 2013

  • Kevin h.

Is there going to be a theme announced?

    November 16, 2013

    • Forbes H.

More details, including theme, will be announced in the next few days.

      November 20, 2013

    • Anne M.

Any news on the theme, API's?

    November 20, 2013

Do I have to be an experienced hacker to attend?

    November 20, 2013

    • Forbes H.

Nope, everybody is welcome to attend!

      November 20, 2013

  • Ian H.

Looks like fun. I'll bring the red bull.

    November 17, 2013

  • David S.

What are the rules and requirements. For example, do we retain full ownership of what we hack (minus the Forbes content of course). Also, can we start with our closed beta app and demonstrate a unique application of the technology for Forbes?
