Get on your bicycle and take a gander at the coops of the South Bronx community gardens. Learn about raising chickens, building coops, and see how well chickens fit into community gardens - providing eggs and manure, eating pests, weeds and kitchen scraps, tilling the soil, and providing education for all who visit. This tour is offered in partnership with GreenThumb.

Anita+2 guestsVery Interesting! A good overview of what it takes to raise chickens in this city, and also what is needed for a garden to chosen for the Chicken Project. Plus it was about the strangest event I've been to in the city, but it was fun! My only thought, though it was great that the press and film directors were interested in the project and tour and chickens, it was a bit distracting having them present. I felt that it got in the way of really getting into the nitty gritty details of raising the chickens. But overall, it provided a great overview for beginners.
