Hi,

This is sad news about the raccoon and your chicken.

But just a slight digression, if you don't mind.........

I'm a second-year beekeeper and noticed that you mentioned the BEE-L.? Is that a beekeeping discussion group?? I'm very interested in staying in touch with? other urban beekeepers.? Would you mind posting the full website or address?? I'd really appreciate that.

Or, if you want to contact me directly about it,, please do........

I'm [address removed]

Thanks so much!

Jess

Hello Fellow Chicken Lovers,

I just posted this on the Discussion page, but I decided to email as well, because I am so distraught! I had two chickens, and one was killed by a raccoon last night.

Bees Too!

I'm a beekeeper so I follow the BEE-L.
There was a recent posting by a master beekeeper
who also had chickens in his yard.

He did something to spook the bees
and they attacked the chickens
killing most of them outright

This is not a posting against bees
- bees are not violent beings
since when they sting
they die
therefore
They are defensive beings
but there are situations
that can activate their defensive protocols.

RX:
If you have chickens and bees
then sequester your chickens
before you start to manipulate your hives.

PS: I rescue feral cats
and have a cat door on my kitchen door
and have had many instances where I have had
raccoons and opossums enter the kitchen in the night
to eat the cat food and mess up the water dishes.

These days I lock up the cat door most nights
with a massive piece of plywood
suspended from TWO hook-and-eye locks

so the burly raccoons can't push their way through

This is how I deal with raccoons
without using my cat traps
