Re: [Just-Food-City-Chicken-Meetup-NYC] Looking for a Chickener in the City

You will probably hear from the folks at Just Food via this post to this MeetUp site.? They have been working with many community gardens and other chicken-keepers in a wide range of settings in NYC to set up and mentor urban chicken-keeping.? I'm sure they can connect you to some hands-on activities and to a variety of folks who keep chickens indifferent kinds of set-ups around the City.

Also, if you go to the NYC Beekeeping MeetUp site -? http://www.nycbeekeeping.com/ - you'll connect with a growing number of urban beekeepers.? Jim Fischer, who offers free, hands-on workshops and mentoring about urban beekeeping is a fabulous resource about all things urban beekeeping-wise.? You can reach him via the Meet Up site or through Gotham City Honey Co-op - http://gothamcitybees.com.? I'm a second-year beekeeper who took workshops with Jim.? He can probably connect you with beekeepers around the city who can talk with you about how they're doing.

Good luck with your project!

:-)

PS Tracy and Derek at my pet chicken dot com are testing a beginning beekeeping kit this year. I hope they are going to offer it soon...there is supposedly a very good bee group in southern CT somewhere like New Cannan. The audubons usually know who is keeping bees.

Hi Emily-
I run the westchester/southern CT backyard poultry meetup and am based out of Stamford CT.
We have members in westchester and also in downtown stamford. You could also speak with the folks who run
www.mypetchicken.com which ships all over the country and has a great hatchery wher eyou can get as few as 5 day old hens.
Im sure they could refer you to people in NYC, besides this group. They are Tracey and Derek and you can tell them I sent you.
Martha Stewart did a show on chicken during this past year and had a whole bunch of us bring birds; and Tracy was featured .

I dont count in the urban arena because I have 5 acres in North Stamford, so Im probably more suburban to real country than urban. Stamford is a real city, though, and some of our members have small coops with a few birds in
their tiny backyards....but it doesn't compare to whats going on in the city-city.

Let me know if I can be of help.
Ill have to grab this Bucky show...it looks great. There is also the chicken whisperer based out of atlanta who has a radio show.

Robert, are those Seramas or oe bantams? Im hatching some tiny oe bantams right now...I love them!! They are so much nicer than the seramas that I had a few years back. I have too many chickens and the oe bantams have become a real interest of mine.

Hi Emily,

I produce a syndicated radio show, Bucky Buckaw's Backyard Chicken Broadcast (www.buckybuckaw.org ; episode archive available at www.radio4all.net & enter Bucky into the search field), am a sponsor of the Western Queens Compost Initiative and collaborate with them, ?Two Coves Garden and other groups to bring chickens to public events to educate children and adults about urban chickening. The chickens I bring are 3 miniature hens (less than a pound) who live with my partner and I in a 1-bedroom in Astoria. ?An article about us is upcoming in the
?
Huffington Post. I'd be happy to share my experiences with you.?Chicken related activities are going to slow down for us with the approach of winter but I am doing at least one more event at Rainey park on November 20 (weather permitting). ?Let me know if you'd like to visit us or come to Rainey.

Robert

Hello All,

I am a journalism student and writer, and I am working on a large project about urban livestock, focusing on chickens and bees in the city. I am looking for someone who keeps chickens inside the boundaries of NYC who is willing to speak with me about raising chickens in tight spaces like NYC and in general, share their experiences. I would want to both interview you as well as be present for "chicken related" activities.

I would like to find some people who are experienced and some who are just starting out, or perhaps haven't even gotten their chickens yet but would be willing to let me follow them through the process.

Join me if you want to introduce a larger audience to the possibility of keeping chickens in the backyard!

Thank you very much in advance! You can contact me at[masked] or by e-mail at [address removed].

Thank you!
