Re: [Just-Food-City-Chicken-Meetup-NYC] hen not going in at night

I have some who go into the woods to nest, but I usually lose them. I lost a turkey hen that way and even perching on the roof of the coop is dangerous (even in the city) so try to retrain them, even if it takes time.
3 peacocks stayed out last night and I was very very worried. raccoons will easily take your birds when they are sleeping. Chickens especially go into trance state when they sleep.
when my chickens try to stay out in the evening (usually its hot or just nice out) I spend the time to herd them in, or I know I will lose some or all.
If you herd them for a few nights they will get back in the habit.
also its worthwhile to put a small clip fan or a larger fan in the coop when its hot like this...a coop, up on the perch, can be much hotter than outside. please check your birds when temps are high...I put fans in all my coops because Ive had chickens drop dead off the perch due to high temps up high in the coop. Chickens dont know to move down to escape heat....but they will try to stay outside.

For months mine have been perching on top of the coop, not inside on the roost.

Our hens are 2+ years old and typically all go in the coop at dusk w/ no problem.  Recently I found one wandering out in the yard well past night fall, and a few more wandering on the floor of the coop, not up on the roost bars.  And same again tonight.  Any ideas?  Maybe the heat?
