I have a year old Black Star named Betsy. She is normally bossy and aggressive and the leader of our flock. When I got home from work yesterday evening, I went out to check on them and noticed Betsy was already in the coop roosting. It was far too early for her to go to bed and the others were still out and about. I checked on her this morning and again she hadn't left the roost in the hen house. She finally came out when I brought them cold fresh watermelon but didn't even peck at it. She nibbled a bit of food but not at all with her usual voracious appeitte. I noticed her comb was drooping to the side. She never lets me touch her but today she actually let me pick her up and hold her without any fight! She definitely seems sick.
These are the three things I'm thinking it could be after reading my chicken books 1) Impacted crop 2) egg-bound 3) worms or parasites. I haven't seen any changes in her feces (maybe a bit runny?) but am looking out for it. She is not snotty or wheezy or anything. Any thoughts as to what it could be?
Also, if it is parasites or worms, where do you get the medicines in the city to treat them? I don't think I have time to mail order them and have no idea what to do!
Any help appreciated...
