Re: [Just-Food-City-Chicken-Meetup-NYC] looking for baby chicks

Whats unsustainable is thinking that all of our beloved feathers friends will live on a paradise of pasture until they die of old age. I have no unrealistic expectations. And if it was four or five roosters like I had last year, I would go through the trouble to heat the water and sharpen my knives. But not for one rooster. With that said, I spoke with them today and they said they would give him a home. They have hundreds of hens and sell fertile eggs, so he just may come in Handy

No that's not the same one I'm talking about.

Found the name, it's Double D bar ranch. They don't charge anything. I volunteer now and again to help with feeding the animals. They're a little short staffed with alot of animals.

Rich is the owners name.

Its called Animal Farm in Manorville. they want $25-30 donation (tax deducible) per bird for feed. I have never brought them feed but they probably get a better bulk price than any of us could get.

What's that animal Sanctuary farm called in Long island? B ranch or something. Think it's in Manorville. I brought my rooster there. Bring some food up to them if you can. Really nice guys.

But you know that likely they will eat him, right?
If its a friend and they promise to keep him forever thats one thing, but a farm is not sustainable unless they eat most if not all of the roosters that are not breeding stock.
I hate to see people travelling very far with unrealistic ideas. If its someone that you know, maybe they will kill all others in favor of your's but itsunlikely.

Does anyone know who or where I can take a rooster? I got a rooster and I can't find a safe place for him and I can not keep him much longer. Any help would be apprecicated.

I really suggest that you just order from a hatchery with a good reputation and good stock. Have them vaccinated for Marek's. I made the mistake of getting chicks from a poultry farmer and they ended up being Marek's positives and 2/3rds of them died. It's not worth the risk. Buy from people who know what they are doing.

There is a feed store at 3255 Park Ave and 163 St in Mott Haven, they pretty much have everything you might need.

Congrats on finishing the coop!

In the spring I ordered 4 chicks from
and all 4 survived the trip just fine!
They ship one day old chicks overnight and can do small orders.  But day old chicks are too small to go straight into the coop.  The mypetchicken people also can check the sex the chicks for you with 90% accuracy (so you get only hens).  It gets cold in the bronx so remember to only get the cold hardy breeds.

HI Cynthia,

I'm not sure where you're located, but we got our chicks from Jersey Chickens in Jackson, NJ. They're lovely, have a pretty wide selection of chicks and it's a great trip to visit them.
