Thank you Maggie!  I think we will be adding heat but not light for my girls.  I also think we should give them a break.  It kinda feels like "barefoot and pregnant" to force the daylight addition on them.

My hens all just started laying again after raising up their peeps. In my experience some birds slack off come winter and some don't. For some reason my silkies lay the best in the winter months....I don't know why.

I do not provide artificial  light so as to give their bodies a well needed rest. I am surprised how well they can lay in the winter without light supplementation. Give yours a bit of a chance to see what they can do.

Should you decide to add light it is recommended they get 14 hours a day I believe to maintain regular laying. Just be careful installing any electric in your coops to insure you don't have a fire hazard.

Egg production has fallen off this week.  I suspect it is due to shortened day light.
Do you provide artificial light for your girls? what kind and what time?

Or do you allow them a break from laying for the winter?

This is our first winter with hens, so suggestions are welcome.  Thanks in advance

Joanne

If the farmers at the market doesn't work out, you may want to try a farm rescue such as Farm Sanctuary.  Also there's one in Woodstock NY and probably others.  Just google New York Farm Sanctuaries.  If I were a farm sanctuary I would be interested in a silkie rooster.  Silkies are so unique.  My little female gets all the attention from guests.

Good luck.  :)
