If you want a very safe fixture for heat or other lights check premier1's fixture. I use it for brooder lamps but it works with any bulb and is safe. Google premier1 for poultry supply and you will see. They have some nice fencing and other supp lies.

Ive heard heat is not necessary here in the city. On the boards at backyardchickens.com there are many people at the top of Canada and they dont use heat or insulate their coops. I suppose it depends what breed you have though. All of my 8 girls are cold hearty and there is no insulation in their coop. But then again this is my first winter...

Thank you Melina.  I think we may go with some additional heat for them but no light.  Still to be discussed with hubby.  The idea of additional protein is welcome news.

yes, I provide light on a timer that goes on at dusk and off at around 8 or 8:30. I use led's or fluorescent bulbs. I dont think it hurts them at all. They also need a little more protein in the winter, You can either supplement with chicken kibble (farmer's helper as 1/10th of their ration) or just some dog kibble.

Egg production has fallen off this week.  I suspect it is due to shortened day light.
Do you provide artificial light for your girls? what kind and what time?

Or do you allow them a break from laying for the winter?

This is our first winter with hens, so suggestions are welcome.  Thanks in advance

If the farmers at the market doesn't work out, you may want to try a farm rescue such as Farm Sanctuary.  Also there's one in Woodstock NY and probably others.  Just google New York Farm Sanctuaries.  If I were a farm sanctuary I would be interested in a silkie rooster.  Silkies are so unique.  My little female gets all the attention from guests.

Good luck.  :)
