Re: [Just-Food-City-Chicken-Meetup-NYC] Three hens

Hi Alison,

We have introduced chicks into our flock without any problem (I'm in the Bronx). There is a technique, as with any new animal introduction, and I'm sure you can do it easily. Also, by the Spring, you will all be old hands at keeping chickens! You will have plenty of help from this group.
I say, "Go for it." Bronwyn is offering a lovely mix of girls. Let us know if you need any help.

Best,
Sherrill

Hi Bronwyn,

Sorry to hear about your change in circumstances.
We are interested. We had three chickens my son was given. My husband built a hen house, we got all supplies, etc, and all turned out to be roosters :(
My only concern is that we had thought to set up in the spring with six or so chicks and if we take three grown chickens my understanding is that we would only be able to add grown hens to the flock, which can be problematic in its own way.
Anyway, I'm running it by my husband, and will get back to you.
We are in Brooklyn.

Best,

Alison

Hi everyone,

I have three chickens that I would like to re-home. All three are wonderful gals. I wish I could keep them but after a break up I'm having a hard time managing everything on my own.

The three chickens arrived in the spring of 2012. They are great layers, follow me everywhere in the yard (and into the house), and made it through the polar vortex like it was nothing. :)

The breeds are: Buff Brahma Bantam (named Toughie), Silver Laced Wyandotte (Winona), and a Rhode Island Red (Grace).

Let me know if anyone is interested in these sweeties.

Bronwyn

There really is no threat of fire with an electric water heater. You can see the type of thing I'm referring to here (no affiliation)

Anyhow, it looks as though we're going to be discussing spring weather and not extreme cold for a while.

Best,
Martha

thanks for the water heater idea, but I don't feel comfortable with electric wires so close to the chickens, last thing I want is a fire in the coop. I have the chicken lady change the water daily, that solve the temporary problem.
